Progress update : we have managed to compile the 2.6.9 kernel using the latest tools, and will soon start either patching it up, or simply building the latest kernel with NBPro support. Currently, the new 2.6.9 kernel activates the NBP screen, so you get the little Tux logo, with the status messages scrolling by Even when you get a kernel panic, you no longer get the stupid black screen of death, and no longer need a serial cable for anything

More to follow!

Hi All

I have been trying to setup Linux on my Netbook Pro for ages, but cant get past the catch 22 of knowing if the CF is correctly setup or the Psion not booting into the CF

Please any help to get the Linux working would be appreciated.

Some progress

I now get the frozen cursor on a black screen

It loads the NetbookPro Linux26 image
then displays the NetBookPro Boot Menu

Any ideas?

Great contributors to this thread have gone into development tangents beyond the basic install, and you need the bases first, before you can benefit from those great developments.

I hope it is not against forum rules to direct you to a thread I opened to help newbies, like you (and me).
Hopefully we'll receive there the streamlined and complete install solution the gurus have already worked out, if more people wanting to just do the basic install to start, come there to request help and get the thread active and productive:

"How to Install Linux on a 128MB CE.NET 4.2 Psion NetBook Pro"

(Wanted to add this in above post, but edit button was not available there
To start with,
It would be great to be able to install the OEM Linux version for the Psion NBP
After that one could spend more time to reach for a newer kernel and added features,
but in the meantime the basic install procedures would be under our belt, (img, CF, etc.)
and we would have a working distro to use...

I expect someone in this very large thread knows,
but it has outgrown the basic "how-to-install" topic:
newbies need to start from scratch...

Please see my questions here:

http://www.hpcfactor.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=15975&po...

and do join in the asking, there ...hopefully we'll receive the basic answers we need!

I have two versions of LX, one on an original netBook Pro 256mb motherboard and one on a 1GB CF card.

The motherboard version has linux 2.6.9-rc1-bk18-nb1
Build 15 nov 02:10:25 GMT 2004
2004-11-15
02:13

The flash card has linux 2.6.9-rc1-bk18-nb1
Build 25 mar 18:13:14 CET 2005
2005-01-04
02:31

The flash card version runs about twice the speed of the m/b version but is very buggy.
On both version the email app will corrupt the O/S and make it unuseable.

Has anyone got a later build than mine and managed to get the email to work without crashing?

Allan

Ok guys, brace yourselves, now it comes:
There seems to be a working 3.1 kernel for the netbook pro. A guy named tworaz built it, you can find his work on github, together with a link to his homepage, where nBkProOs.img_3.1-rc9 can be found.
It boots to a shell (after you renamed it similar to the florian image) and screams for a rootfs. SDcard mounting doesn't seem to be an issue here. Plus I enjoyed some time with emacs 23 already (after chrooting into the ext2 of the CFcard)
So pat the dust off your nbp and get ready to roll!
