Hi - I'm totally (TOTALLY) new here. AWESOME forum!!

I recently acquired two MP900's (upgraded to CE.net 4.2 w/CMONEX load) and cannot get TCPMP to run on either one. I'm trying to do the benchmark test to set up DVD Catalyst, but I must be screwing something up.

I've tried using GAPI 3.09 and the newest 4.03; as well as TCPMP v.70, .71, and .72(b). I follow the instructions here, but when I launch the benchmark test file, it totally blacks out the screen and I can't exit. I can hear the audio just fine, but I have no control over anything. I end up having to yank the battery and reload everything.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

Also - the reason I have TWO MP900's is b/c the first one has this weird and extremely annoying stylus calibration issue. It can't retain calibration settings - they just seem to drift... almost immediately after recalibrating. Is this a hardware issue? If so, is it something I can yank out and replace? I've seen the breakdown photos here and over at HPCNEC, and I've also seen bits and pieces on ebay for pretty cheap. It would be worth the cost just to give it a shot - but I don't even know what part to try to replace. The whole upper screen/digitizer assembly? Just the screen? Just the digitizer?

Anyway - just thought I'd ask in case this has come up before. Thanks again.

Hmm. Try tuning TCMCP (although I have never needed to tune it on my Jornada).

It's a problem with the player (TCPMP) I don't know why, but when you install it it has a "backlight keepalive" option set to on by default - this is what causes you to lose control of the MP900 (turns off backlight but everything is still on). To disable it you have to go to the advanced page in the settings menu and depending on the version you have you do 1 of 2 things:
If the option says "Backlight keepalive for video" make sure it is NOT checked; if the option says "No backlight keepalive for video" make sure it IS checked.

The issue has come up before. You can try to run a business card along the edge of the screen underneath the bezel to clear out any junk that's accumulated. But for mine, the issue was a loose screen cable. Remove the cover over the right hinge (see HPCNEC) to expose a ribbon cable and wiggle/reseat things. It's a 2 or 3 screw affair to get access. If you're doing more, you've gone too far...

Oh yeah. I forgot to add that I just used the HPC Media Player download from this site. I think its a variant of TCMCP, but more importantly, it works.

Edit...

OK, I should have looked first. Now I don't know where I got my media player, but here's the readme file. I'm sure it was from one of the common sources referenced on this site (i.e., this site, hpcnec.com, or msdex's hpc software respository).

Here's what the readme says:

HPC Media Player 1.07 for ARM/ Xscale:
09/09/2007

Warning: the Flash Video Plugin included in this package is intended for newer XScale and Arm compatible devices with good video performance ( preferably XScale 400 Mhz). Many FLV videos available on the web are encoded with a high bitrate .So if your device can’t handle that, it is still recommended to convert your FLV file on your desktop PC first.

For NEC 900c:
-backlight keepalive bug removed (registry setting added)
-for higher bitrate videos and FLV files, use the supplied overclock utility: install the “900c_Overclock.cab” file, reset your device and choose 472Mhz from the tray icon.

This distribution is based on the latest TCPMP build (0.72 RC1) made by Picard and the CorePlayer team, with several changes and add-ons.
Supported video file containers: AVI, MOV (quicktime), WMV, MP4, MPG, FLV
The source code may be downloaded here:
http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/

The following changes have been made to the original standard package:

-1) brand new artwork: new icons, new buttons (basic skin) to update the boring TCPMP look-and-feel,
-2) the application icon and the associated file icon are now different,
-3) the following official plugins have been included: ffmpeg, ac3
-4) H264 (AVC) plugin and unofficial AAC plugin added
-5) the application name is set to “Player” instead of TCPMP; all registry settings are saved in HKLM\Player instead of HKLM\TCPMP
-6) Windows Media 9 plugins are no longer installed by default. You don’t need to install them if you have CE 4.20 (or higher) and if Windows Media Player is already installed in the ROM of your device. If not, install the supplied Codec package.
-7) t2k269 Flash video plugin v 0.4.2 added (FLV videos). See:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=196939
-8) integrated ATI accelerator added (for Sigmarion 3 only)
-9) Backlight Keepalive bug removed (Nec 900c)
-10) Xscale overclock utility added
-11) Mabin Beta Subtitle plugin added

Note on movie subtitles:
Subtitles should be in the SMI format.
If you have a subtitle file in another format (for example SRT), use the following free utility to convert your subtitle file to a SMI file: Subtitle workshop.
Download it here:
http://www.urusoft.net/download.php?lang=1&id=sw

SMI files should be placed in the same folder as your movie files, and have the same name, for example:
My_movie.avi and My_movie.smi

Warning: it may be necessary to change the video driver to GDI or GAPI, to enable subtitles (it does not work with some drivers like the Xscale driver).
