I've tried to install the service pack every way you can imagine: downloading off CF, serial, infrared. Tried to run it from different places too, but it still gives me the same "is not a Windows CE services file" message. How are you supposed to install it? By "Mobilepro desktop" I assumed they meant the desktop of the HPC? Or the computer?

Shouldn't it run from anywhere anyway?

I've followed all the instructions and did a backup, hard reset. I'm stumped.

Does your 880 have the standard rom chip or a 790 rom chip hpc pro or hpc 2000 ?

It has the standard HPC Pro chip. Well, I haven't switched it out and it runs CE 2.11. I suppose that it's the 880 chip then?

Have you tried re downloading the cab or the active-sync installer version.?

Perhaps its corrupt.

Were did you get it, perhaps its listed wrong?


Sounds to me like you were doing it correct, did you try soft reset then try the install ?

I have, I downloaded it from both HPCfactor and NEC's own site. I wasn't aware of an activesync installer version however. The file name is mp78_update.cab.

Yes, I've tried that too, seems like the file was never supposed to run at all on this platform.

EDIT: I've found another person who has this problem, however his went away inexplicably when he copied it to his HPC desktop (I assume), while that is where I have been trying to run it from all this time. Plus he is on a NEC MP 780 and not an 880. Truly odd..

Maybe someone else can chime in soon, I said pretty much all i can think of right off hand.

Extract the files and copy them over to the windows folder using Total Commander....

Won't there be registry edits involved though? Does the system's inability to execute the cab exhibit some sort of problem?

Often the first run of a program will set the registry values if they're not already there, so it can't hurt to try it. However, an alternative is to use MSCEInf to extract the files from the CAB on the PC. MSCEInf will show you what registry entries it sees, so you can copy them over manually if necessary.

But what is different about my 880 compared to everyone else's? Why won't it run the service pack by itself? I must be missing something.

It's not clear to me that the problem is in the 880. The CAB file may be corrupt. If it's corrupt, though, it may not even extract on the PC - but then at least you'll know.

Well guys, looks like a corrupt CAB download was the culprit. I did download the CAB from many places but used an old computer for this task which apparently now has a corrupt downloads problem, as I downloaded it on a newer laptop and it installed fine.
