I am not promoting nor selling any of this stuff. But they are some of the interesting things that caught my eye today...mostly non-CE stuff...

Pretec CF Camera for $9 http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Pretec-VGA-CF-Camera-for-DELL-HP-PALM-P...

I just thought it was a good price.

Sony Clie SL/10U for $22 High Res Gray Scale http://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-CLIE-SL10-U-HANDHELD-PALM-PDA-ORGANIZE...

I thought this was a good price too for a high-res screen that runs on batteries. I could see myself using it an an ebook reader in the car.

Sony Clie SJ/22U for $28 High Res Color http://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-CLIE-SJ22-U-COLOR-HANDHELD-PALM-PDA-WO...

I remember when these were hundreds of dollars..the high-res color screen was a beautiful way to display pictures.

Zipit $35 (Not sure, but it looks cool!) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Zipit-Z2-Wireless-Instant-Messenger-with-Ca...

What can I say, the Zipit looks cool and cute...and is tiny. Wonder how far they have gotten with the Linux hacking on it..

and finally, in case you have more money than you want and feel the need to throw it away...I actually bought one of these once brand new for about $30.

If I'm not mistaken, RTFM has done major Linux hacking on the zipit. Perhaps he'll see this thread and verify that. For years, I used a Sharp Zaurus Classic, the next step up from the OZ. This one's a tad over-priced, despite the nostalgia. I remember some hacker actually getting the OZ on-line to text surf via Compuserve 7-bit>8-bit deal. I did surf/email with the Zaurus w/o problem as long as you had Compuserve Classic.

Yeah the zipit z2 is a neat little unit. I stopped maintaining my linux releases about a year ago now, but its still solid and one of the most popular. http://www.hostwork.com/users/matt/zipitz2/
There are still a lot of people actively developing for it. The latest hacking seems to be based on OpenWRT. Lots of info on the web about the zipit z2.

Cheers

I've always wanted one of those PCMCIA cameras. Might end up getting one. As for that Sharp Wizard, the pricing for those on eBay really get on my nerves. You can get a powerful PDA/HPC for a fraction of the cost. Granted, they're great personal organizers, but that's all they are. (I also had one.)

Anyways, yeah the Zipit has virtually the same hardware in the same form factor as that linux pda/laptop deal I've seen. (Forget the name.) I almost bought one here a couple of months ago but decided against it. But you can get a custom Linux distro on that thing and use it as a mini linux PDA. Heard great things about it. It originally started out as a "wireless instant messenger" for kids.

Solidus, I've had the Pretec camera and the Flycam, and SD versions of the same for my pocketpcs. The best of the cameras is the Flycam with the built in flash. It makes a difference in picture quality to have the flash.

I also used the CECam software from WinCESoft http://wincesoft.de/html/cecam.html

But, I was able to use the Flycam by hacking the pocketpc software that came with it on my 900C without CECam also.

Yea, ya gotta love eBay...

Mapleridgeauction has two interesting items up at the moment.

The first is an eMate. Normally they go for $30-100, depending on what`s included and whether or not the hinges have been fixed. The clear eMate (370605080786) is much rarer but this one tops them all... At least shipping is included.

The second is a very rare Mac 128 with a Twiggy drive (160785335718). It may be rare, but so is the price. And shipping it not included... Ouch!

One thing I`ve learned over the years buying and selling on eBay - It`s only worth what someone is willing to pay...

Rick (Not affiliated with mapleridgeauction and I don't think I'll be shopping there.)

Wow, I haven't looked at or thought of my Zipit in a while. It just sits lonely on a shelf in the closet. With the high resolution screens on phones it has killed my use case for linux on the z2. Was curious about the company when I read this, since I don't think they could survive on a Z3. Seems they have branched heavily into M2M market http://corp.zipitwireless.com/portfolio/

Did you ever recover your Fiva? I was using mine to read an old Kodak photo floppy recently. I think it is my only way to access floppy media in this household now. Unfortunately my floppy was sensitive, it would read for a second on first insertion and then fail. Wound up inserting and ejecting hundreds of times, but was able to copy all files. Thank goodness Windows98 was resilient in their abort/retry/fail!

Rick, I've been looking at eMates off and on, but not surprisingly none of their batteries seem to hold a charge. (I have picked up a MessagePad H1000 recently in a package deal with a Compaq C140. )

CE Geek;

I found the original MessagePad more of a technology showcase than anything else. For me it was missing the caret insertion, reliable handwriting recognition, Wi-Fi, etc. that later Newtons and the eMate had. But, the OMP is a good introduction to what a Newton is and can be.

However, the eMate is something else. It’s basically indestructible (if a little too big) and the keyboard is fantastic for typing. The main problems with it are the hinges and lack of memory. If you get one I would suggest getting one that already had the hinges fixed and a re-celled battery pack. If you can get the memory expansion card, so much the better. The eMate memory expansion modules are very rare nowadays.

As you probably know, both the eMate and the Newton take linear PCMCIA expansion cards. However, there is a driver available (not available for the OMP) that allows the use of normal PCMCIA memory cards. Unfortunately, no matter which type you use, you won’t be able to read them in a Mac or PC. Newtons had a propriety file structure.

There is also an extremely active user community. They’ve produced patches, drivers and hardware over the years that have enabled later Newtons and the eMate to use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, CF cards, etc. They’re even fixed the 2010 date problem. The mailing list is where everyone meets. Check out http://www.newtontalk.net/

Enjoy the OMP and the eMate (if you go for one).

Rick

I'm actually impressed with the handwriting recognition on the H1000, considering when the device came out. (And I like the scratch-out method of editing text. )

You mean "here is my eBay listing"

That is a very important difference and creates a violation of the forum rules...
