| Hi, first post.
It's nice to see a forum with some relatively recent posts about these old devices. After several tries I finally managed to get my device to boot Debian. I made several tries with different d/l's from the net. What finally worked for me was a 820 kernel and a debian-arm tar.gz built for 720. I'm sure most of the problems were self-inflicted but at least I have a (barely) functioning system to start from. Fun. |

I used the directions and the debian-sarge-small-j720-image.tar.bz2 from that website. I couldn't get the files in the fat tar file to work. I already had a kernel and bootloader from here:
http://jornada820.sourceforge.net/binaries.html
courtesy of François-René Rideau and others that would boot and fall back to busybox on a ram disk. I booted with that and it did a pivot_root to the Debian file system. |

| Would you be willing to create some full size BMP screenshots? This is definately something to add to the Software Compatibility List. |

| Sure, I'd be glad too but it may be the wk end before I can get back to playing with the device. I have 2-3 cell phone .jpgs of the device booting and the resultant dmesg if you'd like me to post them. |

| I finally got to play with my J820 some more:
Booting the kernel with my Orinoco Gold wireless card inserted:
Dmesg: eth0: Hardware identity 0001:0001:0004:0002
eth0: Station identity 001f:0001:0007:001c
eth0: Firmware determined as Lucent/Agere 7.28
eth0: Ad-hoc demo mode supported
eth0: IEEE standard IBSS ad-hoc mode supported
eth0: WEP supported, 104-bit key
eth0: MAC address 00:02:2D:3F:22:6A
eth0: Station name "HERMES I"
eth0: ready
eth0: index 0x01: Vcc 5.0, irq 106, io 0xd184d000-0xd184d03f
To stop the kernel from attempting the pivot_root you can create an empty file or folder on your Fat16 partition with the name "noautomount". After the kernel loads you are given the choice to enter "standalone" which runs everything through the "BusyBox" executable or "rootfs" which goes ahead with the pivot_root.
/# standalone
init started: BusyBox v1.00 (2005.07.25-09:23+0000) multi-call binary
cardmgr[302]: cannot access /lib/modules/2.4.31-j820: No such file or directory
cardmgr[302]: watching 2 sockets
/# rootfs
The system pivot_roots and gives error messages from fsck.ext2 (unsupported feature(s) (/dev/hda2))
... root file system mounted read-only. To remount it read-write:
# mount -n -o remount,rw /
The wireless card shows a green light under both the ramdisk and after the pivot_root. I get all my web access through a tethered Google Galaxy Nexus which is also capable of being a wifi hotspot. As a test I set the phone up as an unencrypted access point.
For both "standalone" and the Debian-arm mount when cycling the phone "hotspot" on and off:
eth0: New link status: AP Out of Range (0004)
eth0: New link status: AP In Range (0005)
eth0: New link status: AP Changed (0003)
eth0: New link status: AP Out of Range (0004)
It appears that the hotspot has to be activated before booting. More to follow...

| When I boot with a NETGEAR Model FA411 PCMCIA network card inserted:
eth0: NE2000 Compatible: io 0xd184d300, irq 106, hw_addr 00:40:F4:32:3E:E2
There were 4 ttys listed in /dev: tty, ttySA0, ttySA1, ttySA2. I assume one of these is the serial cable port.
setserial -g /dev/ttySA[0123]
/dev/ttySA0, UART: undefined, Port: 0x0000, IRQ: 17
/dev/ttySA1, UART: undefined, Port: 0x0000, IRQ: 15
/dev/ttySA2, UART: unknown, Port: 0x0000, IRQ: 0
Both of the userlands I linked to in post three work, one being slightly larger containing docs and locales. I tried the icewm-image-Mongo-08.07.08.tar.bz2. It appeared to try to pivot_root with the j820 kernel but then stopped with error messages:
mv: unable to rename 'tmp/log': No such file or directory
ln: /tmp/log: File exists
Switching root partition...
illegal instruction
illegal instruction
and then hung with a blinking cursor.
If someone knew what they were doing, which I don't, it might not take much to get Mongo to boot on an 820.
Just for the heck of it I also tried 7xx-gpe-06.16.08.tar.bz2 from the Jlime site but it stopped with the message "couldn't open /dev/vc/1" |

| Hi,
Been a few years since your last post I know, but wonder if you ever got further with running Debian and apps?
Thanks,
Mark |

| Wow, I just discovered this! I'd love to know more about what's possible with the J820 and Linux! |

| I rather stay away from Linux as much as I can. I could build a house from all the bricks I've made with Linux |

| After reading up on it a bit, there's no way to connect it to the web, so pretty much useless.. would've been amazing to use my 820 as SSH client. (I know there are SSH clients for WinCE 2.11 but they're not very good sadly) |

| Hi folks. Sorry for the late reply. I got caught up in the Permaculture/Food Forest movement and have spent the last 3 years converting my few acres to a sustainable food and energy oasis and learning to forage the incredible bounty of free food that surrounds us. I never got any further in my experiments with the 820 but I still have several of them along with a bunch of PEG-UX50's and a lot of other oldie but goodies in my 'junk' pile. ;-) With Winter coming on I will drag out the 820 and see if I (along with help) can make more progress. |
