I love stories like this. A couple of months ago, before I retired, I had left work and was waiting for the next subway train. I noticed a fellow standing on the platform using an old Palm IIIxe. I pulled out my TRGpro and we talked until the train arrived. He still used the Palm every day.

As one who is still selling (and repairing, and upgrading, and using...) HP 200LX's I do understand the sentiment too well.
Some companies like HP and PSION made systems that had one perfect aspect: If the power ran out, you could pop into the first gas station or drug store, buy two AA's for the next month of running.
It is not nostalgia, just holding on to near-perfect hardware.
