Hello!

I managed to make Sigmarion 1 run NetBSD yesterday.
I'm still new to BSD OS, although I have experience with Linux.

vi is working, but not X window system (yet).

Maybe I'll go back in time and connect to the internet via a serial cable...

Thanks!

Well, I haven't yet done anything more, but I am planning to get one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Serial-Device-Server-Ethernet-Converter/dp/B0... to try to connect Sigmarion 1 to the internet via serial cable to ethernet converter. I don't know if it will work, but I guess it's worth a try.

Or, I can try to make a bridge between my desktop computer's WiFi and serial cable. This too, I have no experience so I have yet to try.

Does NetBSD run Lynx (or Links2)? Maybe PINE? You could have a connected monster on your hands!

Unfortunately, as far as I checked, it doesn't have lynx, links2, nor PINE.

BUT:

I have the gcc available, so I inputted / compiled this program I found on the internet that outputs a beautiful triangle.
http://www.programmingsimplified.com/c-program-print-stars-pyramid

As long as I have gcc and a way to transfer files between host computer and NetBSD Sigmarion 1, I'm ready for anything

I will try to figure out how to connect NetBSD Sigmarion 1 to the internet via serial cable and report back here...

How big is your swap partition? And how much RAM do you have available on the Sigmarion 1?

According to the spec, Sigmarion 1 has 32MB of RAM, with 16MB user area.
I'll have to check the swap partition of NetBSD when I get back. I will report the checked results here later on.

netcat,

I just checked my Sigmarion 1, and the swap partition is 128MB, with 128MB free.

RAM is 12MB free.

Hmmm.. so you could probably doing without swap. Can I ask you to post a screenshot of the top command please? Are you planning to get a text based web browser running on the Sigmarion 1? I could not see how to get the Sigmarion 1 connected to the network, usb wifi stick? Have you had any luck with gcc yet?

Ok, I will post the screenshot of the top command tomorrow.

Yes, I'm planning to get a text based browser running on Sigmarion 1, but I have to first figure out how to get the serial cable connected to a Windows / Linux machine (host) and get files transported from the host. I've been pretty busy these days, but I'll try to work on it on weekends / my spare time.

I'm hoping to somehow use serial cable <-> ethernet to the network... Do you know how? I've read in the internet there is indeed a way how to do, but I never tried it.

As for the gcc, I got only simple program to work that uses stdio.h, but will try to get something more advanced working in the near future.

Interesting! Sorry for bothering you again but could you compile something in the background and take a top command screenshot while doing that and one screenshot when idle please? I am on holiday this weekend but I'll try to catch up next week putting NetBSD on a HP Jornada 720 with no swap partition at all. Never tried Serial to Ethernet as well but I think there is PPP involved. I found the following on a FreeBSD forum.

... you can connect with serial directly to a computer in between. I often connect vintage DOS boxes to the internet by running PPP on the DOS box and using a serial cable to any on-line Linux box set to port forwarding. This avoids using a network card on the originating machine. Any old machine with both a serial and an ethernet port can be used since the requirements are minimal. You need to run pppd on this in-between box which can then connect with whatever you want ...

Hi, here's the top command screenshot.

Sorry, I don't have anything to compile at the moment on my Sigmarion 1 so I can't give you how much resource it eats...
