It's a great machine, and yet, I didn't pull the trigger and buy one last year. I can't remember why--is it because it's difficult to root, and hard to update to Froyo?

At any rate, wow, gentoo. I went to your posted link--is that a five-minute boot to gentoo? Guess that'd be okay if suspend worked.

Ahh!

I believe what the post in the link was saying was that they ran a sl command (not to be mistaken with ls) which is a Steam Locomotive (joke?) command that displays a steam locomotive running on a railroad track. I think that command ran for 5 minutes, not the boot. link to Youtube video of sl command

Well, no for now. I am sticking with the Android 1.6 on my IS01 as it's stable.
Maybe if I find a way to using other OS by emulator of some sort that supports Android 1.6 that will be great.
A DOS or really light version of Linux via an emulator perhaps?

The IS01 has such a great form factor. I guess older versions of QuickOffice will run on 1.6. There are a couple of text browsers, Links2 wannabes, kicking around, but they're not great and development is slow, if at all.

PM me if you need one of those early, pre-Google QuickOffices.

Hey Stingraze, here are some good Android apps to install on your Passport:

F-Droid app store: for open source APKs.
Then install YALP from F-Droid. That gives you easy access to the Google Play Store.

Then there are two apps that are really useful for controlling your other apps:

Ghost Commander (from F-Droid). It's a file manager, but it has an applications section that allows you to shut down Android apps, which is useful if you install apps like Skype that are hard on the battery.

App Ops (from YALP). It allows you to control Android app permissions, so you can stop apps from accessing files, location services, contacts, etc.

Also, if you need Google Play Services, see this thread: https://forums.crackberry.com/blackberry-10-os-f269/cobalts-official...

Very cool looking phone, stingraze. Obviously, the physical keyboard is its sexiest part. Are you using the Sharp IS01 for comparison? I always admired that machine.

Jake

Thank you, Jake!

Yeah, I am using the IS01 as a comparison, sort of. More of copying what Mobi was doing with the Jornada. :-) Yes, the physical keyboard, it sure feels good.
I'm beginning to get the hang of the Blackberry Passport and installed my app on it by apk. Very easy to do. Having 3GB of RAM is pretty good even by today's standards so I really enjoy this new handheld.

As for the IS01, I've discovered it can boot Gentoo Linux (link) I'm tweaking it bit by bit it is indeed an awesome machine.

Hello Mobi,

Thank you very much for the helpful tips!

App Ops seems like a very useful tool, especially when thinking about app security.

Jake, I have tried Quick Office you sent me via email, but unfortunately it failed to install on my IS01. I guess Android 1.6 is a little bit too old? The good thing is though, IS01 has Documents To Go by DataViz preinstalled, and I have Word To Go, Sheet To Go, Slideshow To Go and PDF To Go that can be used still.

Stingraze, can you try the apk on another higher Android? Just to check if upload is okay.

I have an old device with Android 2.1 if you need me to test anything. You might test in on the Passport too. The runtime is from Android 4.3.

Roger that, I'll test it on my Xperia Z5 later on.

Bummer, I was hoping for a bad upload. Because bouncing around the web, I do find donut compatible with quickoffice but perhaps not this version.
