JLime Repository

By popular request, here is a code repository clone for JLime

http://repository.hpcfactor.com/

  • The existing public Vargtass and Mongo repositories have been cloned into it. I have attempted to duplicate (within reason) the structured used on the JLime.com server.

  • I have done some poking around on the WBM to get some other bits, however I don't have the time (or the will power) to try and locate everything (primarily the JLime releases folder). If someone wants to take up that chalice, please let us know.

  • If anyone has anything to add, please let us know here.

  • If anyone has any problems, please let us know here.

  • If anyone has any repository mirrors for any other projects that should go up here, please let is know here.

What is JLime?
JLime is (was) an open source Linux distribution for a small number of Handheld PC devices - primarily the HP 620 and higher as well as the NEC 900 series. As most devices do not have a flash ROM, instead of completely replacing Windows CE, the JLime system runs off of a CF card, meaning that you can easily return to running Windows CE without risk to the device.

You can read a review of an early version of JLime from 2007 at the link below

View: JLime Donkey 1.0.2

Non-repository Content
I have attempted to mirror the download section from JLime.com on the WBM as best as I can. This material can be found at:
http://repository.hpcfactor.com/public/jlime/releases/

It does however need a lot more work and there are a lot of missing files (either missing or with 0KB place holders).
If you have some time to try and extract more material from the WBM or have any missing materials, please get in touch here.

Size
The repository is currently around 4GB. This also means that the HPC:Factor server disk is almost full (1.7GB free). Please consider donating to help with running costs if you found this useful or if you are in the UK, please shop with Amazon using our Amazon associates link at the bottom of the page. There are no ad's here and I single headedly pay for the running costs of this myself.

Connecting your H/PC to the Repository & Mirrors
If you want to hook your device up to the repository please edit your /etc/opkg.conf file to match the distribution link.

Oops, sorry everyone, the HTTPd had a MIME filter on it which was blocking the download of some of the file extensions. It should be OK now.

Hi,
I discovered a few dead links on the hpc Jlime repository, which bring up a "404 file or directory not found" error. The same files were available at the repository.deuill.org site.
The files that I noticed were all in the /lib/libs directory. Namely:

libgtk-webcore-jscore-0.5.3-1_0.5.2+svn20070722-r1_arm.ipk
libgtk-webcore-nrcit-0.5.3-1_0.5.2+svn20070722-r0_arm.ipk
libgtk-webcore-nrcore-0.5.3-1_0.5.2+svn20070722-r1_arm.ipk</ul>
]

I suppose there could be others.

Thanks again for the repository.
Dave

IIS doesn't allow + signs to the left of the ? in a URL by default. That is resolved now.

Thank you for fixing that. The files are available now.

My understanding of Linux is still nearly nil... the learning curve is pretty steep, for an old Windows brain.

I successfully installed one variation of Jlime on my J-720/728, but only because I found distribution files for a functional system (with instructions) at http://www.acetolyne.net/Projects/node/17#JLime.

My installation was built with the 5 files downloaded from that site. However, I don't see similar files in the Jlime repository. With only the repository, I would not have known where to begin. Are instructions available for assembling a system from the Jlime repository?

Also, I don't know how the package that I installed compares with other possible packages.

There were a few old posts discussing various configurations (for example: Prebuilt Jornada 7xx linux image and Jlime Mongo Linux for Jornada 7xx HOW-TO pre-release beta. But these were mostly pretty early ("pre-release"). Some of the later messages, in these posts, have links to various "releases" on the defunct Jlime site. I assume these were more or less complete packages. If so, are these packages (and hopefully instructions and a comparison of package contents / features) available anywhere?

Please forgive my ignorance.

Dave,

I'll throw it out there to the community to put together some CESD's based on the material on the WBM on this, but basically, most of what you want is under http://repository.hpcfactor.com/public/jlime/releases/

I've just installed jlime on my 690, and find it freezes all the time if I do anything remotely intensive, and I have to pull the batteries, which results in CF corruption. Anyone else have this issue? Got any clues how I can avoid it?

I would go to the wayback machine on the internet and resurrect the forum section for the J690 and Donkey. The trouble is, when I just tried to do that, I couldn't bring up anything except the forum's main page. It seems the J690 hardware supports Opie: http://www.hpcfactor.com/reviews/software/jlime/donkey-1-0-2/ but the instructions for any of this are proving hard to find.

I think it's just thrashing the disk and locking up, not enough memory!

I disabled booting to X and made some more login shells, and it's working much better. I even have WPA working now.

But, I'm using the userland "vargtass" from here: https://deuill.org/code/jlime-vargtass/

And I noticed that the kernel is version 2.6.17. But the latest version for hp6xx was 2.6.24 AFAIK. Does anyone have a copy of this? And, does anyone have the patches needed to rebuild the kernel?

I see a kernel image for 2.6.24 here, but the modules are incomplete: http://repository.hpcfactor.com/public/jlime/releases/donkey/kernel...

And I see a patch for 2.6.17 here: http://repository.hpcfactor.com/public/jlime/releases/donkey/kernel...

Does anyone know the difference between the versions?

Does anyone have the modules for 2.6.24 or the patches need to rebuild it?

Thanks

Sorry I can't help. I don't have the J690. I vaguely remember kernel issues vs suspend w/ the J720. Sometimes, the earlier kernels worked better. But geez, that was many machines ago. Once I got a wifi extender that plugs into a wall outlet, I gave up on Jlime since the wifi extender has an ethernet jack, making Windows CE somewhat mobile again (as long as you're near a plug )

Congrats on the WPA, by the way. Can't remember if I got that working in Opie or not. I did find Opie to be the fastest handheld Linux and I got Textmaker for Sharp Zaurus to install/run. HanCom WP as well. I can't stand Abiword...

This is cool that you got this mirrored. Now if only we could get a mirror of the old handhelds.org website and/or the SIMPad distros.

Also, isn't there some linux repo host you can mirror this on?
