I have an old UMPC which runs Windows XP. It desperately needs a refresh, but the problem is the HD is one of those weird 50pin(?) connectors and I have no adapter or other PC with the same input. The UMPC will also not boot through USB. If I want to boot through a CD rom drive, it has to be the old Firewire types. So I'm curious, has anyone here ever installed Windows XP through a partition on the internal hard drive of their computers?

Sure, create a FAT32 partition format it with MSDOS 7 boot loader (if you can't boot from a DOS floppy), copy the i386 folder off of the CD into it, find and copy smartdrv.exe for DOS onto the FAT32 partition, boot the DOS floppy/FAT32 partition, run smartdrv.exe, run .\i386\winnt.exe

Thanks for the info C:Amie. Of course, I was able to botch the install so now I'm in deeper.

Rich, it's a "CF/PATA 50 pin" connector. The previous owner said that he thinks some older iPod's used the same HD. I'm trying to find a USB dongle that'd allow me to connect the HD up to my main computer, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for, or if the ones I've seen are even compatible.

https://www.ocinside.de/media/uploads/mach_xtreme_nano_60gb_1_8_pata... - this one? It looks like CF connector but these devices do not support CF protocol, just PATA. You can hook it to IDE port or to PC Card or CardBus port with suiting converter.

Look for CF-IDE or CF-PCMCIA adaptor but with non-deep slot or you won't be able to insert it.

These look like CF connectors but with different plastic work, almost sure in that it's the thing which you are looking for.

Can it boot from a USB floppy? You can probably find a modern DOS release that will allow USB CD ROM access.

Did reinstalling improve anything?

Just ZIP your Windows install file and transfer it to your partition as an email attachment, or use remote desktop and copy it to your patition…

Windows NT3/4/5 overwrite installs don't clean up the disk though, they just erase the registry and do a brutal over-write of system files. You wind up with a complete mess afterwards and do not necessarily fix driver conflict issues if the system can still find old drivers in INF.

Hey all, sorry for the late reply. As it stands, I have no way of installing Windows XP without a form of adapter. The only method of externally installing anything without an adapter, is to use network boot. Something that's just beyond my pay grade from what I've researched online. Windows does not fully load now, just a black screen with a cursor. I had issues finding some DLL's when I tried upgrading, and even though I did find them I guess it corrupted the install somehow.

Thanks for the links Alt Bass, that's something I'm going to have to order. I prefer eBay since I can use ebay.co.uk and get sellers from China with free shipping to Norway. I'm curious if you think this would work: https://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-to-SATA-PATA-IDE-2-5-3-5-Inch-Hard-...

This is not the thing which I found previously. The size of the HDD is not 2.5" but 1.8", and the interface is callled 1.8" IDE.

Thank you Alt Bass, I thought the one I posted had the same interface since it has three of them.
