Code City City Time 1.5

John Ottini | Handheld PC Reviews
February 7, 2004

If you own a Palm or Pocket PC you are probably already familiar with City Time, the award winning travel and world time software by Code City. What you may not know is that this best selling software is also available for your Handheld PC 2000. Although this software is geared towards the business traveler with it's emphases on flight and time scheduling, don't let that fool you into thinking that it has no practical uses for the rest of us homebodies, dreamers and mind travelers.

A Brief Look at the World

City Time's main screen or user interface consists of a brightly illustrated relief map of the entire world. Tap anywhere on the map and the name, day and time of the nearest city appears. Look a bit closer and you will notice a day/night plot across the world showing what part of the world is in daylight hours and which is in total darkness. Along the right side of the screen you will find a listing of 6 (user selectable) cities along with there correct date and time in reference to the local time in your selected home city. So much information on just one screen and yet you have only scratched the surface of the fascinating software.

Main Screen

Here is a brief look at some of the useful functions available to the user in City Time.

Flight Appointments and City Appointments

The flight appointments function in City Time will help you create a flight itinerary, complete with Airline name, Flight number, Departing & Arrival - City, Time and Airport code. If you need to set a flight reminder or perhaps enter any notes or messages pertinent to your trip, City Time provided you both capabilities. Worried about your travel plans conflicting with important previously scheduled appointments - relax City Time references your existing Calendar information and checks for scheduling conflicts. Once you are done, setting up your Flight or City Appointment, City Time automatically transfers the new appointments to Pocket Outlook Calendar or in my case CE Agenda Calendar.
City Appointments functions in much the same way as Flight Appointments, but deals with scheduling meetings and events, rather than Flight itinerary.

Distance and Time Calculator

Find out the distance in miles, kilometers or Nautical Miles between any two user selected cities. Set your estimated travel speed and City Time will calculates the approximate travel time.

Time Calculator

Compare your local time to that of four other cities. This is great for planning appointments while traveling or making sure you don't wake up your buddy in Europe at 2 in the morning with a needless phone cal.

Sunrise and Sunset Information

If you are an early riser and plan to make the most of your full day, you might find it useful to know when the Sun is expected to rise and set or how many hours of daylight are at your disposal.

Moon Rise, Set & Phase

If you are an avid Moon watcher, City Time will keep you informed on when the moon is expected to rise and set and also the number of hours the moon will be visible on any given day.

More Options for your Consideration

The list of cities covered by City Time is fairly extensive, but if your particular city is not on the list, you will be happy to know that you can add or delete cities to/from the original list. It is also important to note that Sunset and Twilight information can be set to Official, Civil, Nautical Astronomical or Ionospheric. There is no Acrobat PDF or printed user manual, but the internal help files are very informative and will probably answer 99% of your questions.

My Conclusion

I found this software to be both, useful and educational! I would certainly recommend it to anyone who is a frequent or infrequent world traveler, to folks who have friends in different time zones or to HPC users who love maps and enjoy interesting software.
