Overview:

This article discusses Networking under Windows CE 2.0 and Windows CE 2.0 SP1.

More Info:

Windows CE 2.0 did not ship with integrated Ethernet network support unlike with later versions. Microsoft released the network stack drivers to OEMs after the initial release of the platform, but no OEM subsequently released a Handheld PC with bundled network support.

Microsoft's Windows CE 2.0 network layer were not made available as a user serviceable package. HPC:Factor subsequently released the network support layer, generic drivers and network SMB redirector as the HPC:Factor Network Service Pack for Windows CE 2.0.
The Network Service Pack (NSP) is required on the Windows CE 2.0 device before any network connectivity can be enabled.

The NSP includes an updated version of the Network redirector binary over and above the version available through Microsoft. It is recommended that all Windows CE 2.0 users install the NSP in order to make use of the highest possible driver versions for your device as well as the additional update benefits offered by the release.

Wired Networks - Ethernet (IEEE 802.3)

Windows CE 2.0 supports wired networks where a third party driver has been made available for the platform, or a compatible NE2000 adapter is used in conjunction with the NSP installation.

Wireless Networks - (IEEE 802.11)

The 802.11 specification was not in common use at the time of Windows CE 2.0's release. Consequently limited supports exists for using Wireless network adapters on CE 2.0. A small number of adapter devices have however received OEM driver support for this generation of Windows CE.
