related problems. The document does not cover troubleshooting non-Outlook

engine are either caused by in correct attachment handling or damaged
PST (Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders) file. The synchronisation
engine does not include user accessible error reporting, making
diagnosing specific problems difficult.
1. Synchronisation Client Version
Each new Sync client release contains bug fixes and sync engine
enhancements. Unless you have a specific reason not to upgrade.
All users should make use of the latest synchronisation client
for their Handheld PC (H/PC Explorer 1.1 for Windows CE 1.0x and
ActiveSync 3.8 for all other clients). More information on synchronisation
clients can be found here.
The use of ActiveSync 4.x is not explicitly recommended for Handheld PC users.
2. Toggle the Sync option on/off
- Disconnect your Handheld PC
- In ActiveSync choose Tools > Options
- Disable the item from the Sync Options list that is causing
the problem.
- Click OK
- Synchronise your device. You should not see any errors
- Disconnect your Handheld PC
- Return to Tools > Options
- Enable the item and reset the advanced options to their default
values by clicking the settings button
- Click OK and attempt to re-synchronise
3. Uninstall and Reinstall the Synchronisation client
Ensure that there are no corrupt files associated with the Sync client, uninstall
and reinstall the program from your computer. More information on this can
be found in the sync client section.

6. Outlook to Operating System compatibility
As new versions of Outlook have been release, so have new version
of Windows. As the Operating Systems have become more complex
the chances of experiencing communications issues that relate
directly to changes made in the Operating System architecture
have increased.
Ensuring that your Office / Outlook version is as current as possible
is recommended.
Using legacy versions of Outlook, such as a Outlook 97 on current
generation Operating Systems such as Windows XP is not recommended
as there has never been a support policy for this product combination.
Windows XP: HPC:Factor recommends that if possible all users aim for a base
Outlook level of Microsoft Outlook 2000 Service Pack 3.
Office 2000 has seen a Service Pack issued within the product
life of Windows XP, and therefore undertakes a level of certified
compatibility.
Windows Vista: Users should aim to have a base of Office/Outlook 2003 SP3 in order to receive all necessary compatibility fixes required under that platform.
All Office and Outlook versions receive Microsoft QFE and Service
Pack updates to improve the code quality, applications stability
and overall performance. In the interest of security and maintaining
compatibility all users should patch their installations before
continuing.
HPC:Factor maintains regularly updated guides on updating Microsoft
Office and Outlook:
7. Outlook Personal Folders Integrity (PST)
The Outlook store folder, or PST file. Is a large database file
similar to Microsoft Access databases. Over time there is a chance
that errors can occur within the database without presenting any
obvious symptoms to the user.
Such corruption is common, especially in larger, older PST files
that have migrated through several Outlook versions. ActiveSync
may encounter an error why trying to resolve your synchronisation
