Windows CE 2.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
After several months of public
usage, certain issues were discovered in Windows CE 2.0 that required a solution
to ensure the long-term successful usage of the platform.
The days of Windows CE 2 were before the current era of Flashable ROM chips
in mobile devices. Once the Operating System was written to the ROM chip, and
flaws in its code would be locked to the device. In order to ensure that any
errors that appeared in the Embedded Operating System could be dealt with, as
part of the Core coding of the Windows CE platform, the OS prioritises system
files by their placement.
If a file is found to exist in ROM (On the embedded, chip) as well as being found
in RAM (The system storage area that you can save data to and from). The file
present in RAM will be given priority and the ROM embedded file will be ignored.
This process allows a Windows CE device to receive core Operating System updates.
Service Pack (SP) was the solution. The SP contains a number of bug fixes and
updates that address certain specific, key issues that are found in a product.
Microsoft SP's are a special update heralding from Windows NT development where
large updates, cumulative security patches and general fixes are applied to the
system all at once.
Fixes & Updates List:
2.0 SP1 contains fixes for the following issues:
- Copying large files
or sets of files to Compact Flash, PCMCIA ATA Flash, or SRAM cards can result
in the system freezing when suspended and reactivated during the copy operation.
SP1 corrects this problem, enabling file copy operations during power cycling.
one folder into another where the folders names differ by ONLY the last character
(for example: pasting a folder named "Doc" into a folder named "Doc1")
has caused the device to crash -- this operation now works correctly.
authentication now supports up to 256-character responses. This will permit your
Handheld PC to connect to more online service providers.
use eventually degrades performance over time. SP1 addresses current known issues
which result from long-term use with network connections.
- The Calendar application did not permit the creation of new appointments
with the New Appointment dialogue if the start time was 7:00 a.m. With SP1
installed, you can create an appointment with any start time.
- Manually changing an event sound in the Sounds control
panel caused other event sounds to be set incorrectly. SP1 enables you to individually
set any event sound to the .WAV file of your choice without disrupting any other
- If you are using Microsoft Outlook version 8.03 or later, and synchronise
your Windows CE 2.0 Mobile Device with your PC, and the current time zone
of your H/PC is set to a location in the southern hemisphere in time zones
where daylight savings time is supported, appointments may appear at incorrect
times. Appointments will now display at the correct time regardless of location
or daylight savings time status in all regions of the world.
Service Pack is not available directly from Microsoft. It is down to your Handheld
PC's Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to ship the Service Pack to the end
While most OEM's distributed the same package, some chose to repackage
or alter the contents of the service pack. As such it is essential that you download
and install the correct SP for your device.
Also, some OEM's no longer provide
these files for public download, as a result, HPC:Factor has a download archive
of all known SP1 distributions for public download.
