Windows 98 Logo

Windows 98 currently retains active updates through the Windows Update Service. This information on this page is designed to be a reference for what updates are needed for the operating system. It is essentially the HPC:Factor recommended updates procedure for using your Handheld PC in conjunction with Windows 98 and Windows 98SE.

Support for Windows 98 was originally supposed to end in December 2003. In January 2004 Microsoft announced that it would extend the pay-per incident support for Windows 98 until June 2006. This means that while Windows 98 will be regarded as a defunct operating system, work for continuing support for other Microsoft technologies under Windows 98 will continue, as will corporate level patching. Whether or not any future patches will be released to the consumer is another matter.

We recommend that if possible you upgrade your computer to Windows 2000 or higher. However if you must use Windows 98, we recommend that you do not directly connect the system to the Internet and minimise any network shares that you setup on the computer. Do not serve any information to the Internet from your system, such as using Personal Web Server to host a web site.
