Why is registration compulsory?

HPC:Factor is a community website that is run not-for profit, however this doesn't mean that we do not incur costs as part of our operational life. In fact there are times when running a site of this size can be very cost prohibitive.

As a result of endless bandwidth theft from hot-linking, and because of the sheer load placed on our servers from existing content, it has been decided that we will require registration with us before you can use H/PC:Update as a means of ensuring quality of service for our existing user base.

What does it cost?

H/PC:Update is completely free, as is registration with HPC:Factor.

What is the purpose of H/PC:Update?

H/PC:Update is designed to restore into the public domain many of the updates, patches, fixes, drivers and documentation released by OEM's since 1996 which have been lost as organisations have moved onto newer product markets and reorganised websites.

H/PC:Update aims to offer the Handheld PC community a single point of contact where users can download important stability or functionality updates for their mobile devices.

What content is in H/PC:Update?

H/PC:Update is designed to act as the Windows Update for the Handheld PC community. The databases used by H/PC:Update include downloads released by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), Microsoft or by HPC:Factor for a particular device.

Downloads are exclusively limited to these categories, and while there may be application or third party driver content on some listings, their presence on H/PC:Update indicates that they were released specifically by the OEM through their support service.

H/PC:Update is not a software download resource, neither is it an index matching application or third party software to any given Handheld PC.

H/PC:Update content is organised into a number of categories. These are:

  • Application Software
  • Communications
  • Developer Tools
  • Device Drivers
  • Extra's & Misc
  • HPC:Factor Updates
  • Manuals & Documentation
  • Microsoft Updates (Generic)
  • Patches & Fixes
  • ROM Images
  • Security Tools
  • Service Packs
  • Synchronisation

I don't see my device listed. What should I do?

H/PC:Update, like HPC:Factor is designed for users of Windows CE based Handheld PC's and Windows CE Tablet PC devices. HPC:Factor does not support Handheld PC's in the generic term, only in the Microsoft Corporation Trade Mark guise.

These devices are defined as running:

  • Handheld PC 1.0 (Windows CE 1.00)
  • Handheld PC 1.01 (Windows CE 1.01)
  • Handheld PC 2.0 (Windows CE 2.0)
  • Windows CE 2.10
  • Handheld PC Professional (Windows CE 2.11)
  • HPC2000 (Windows CE 3.0)
  • Windows CE .net (CE 4.0, 4.1, 4.2)
  • Windows CE 5.0
  • Windows Embedded CE 6.0

If your device does not run one of these operating system, then H/PC:Update will not provide you with downloads for your mobile device. If however your device is running one of these operating systems and you do not see it listed, please contact us.

Can I queue downloads for several devices and/or Windows CE versions?

No. H/PC:Update is designed to provide you with downloads for one device and one version of Windows CE at a time. This is intentional. You are more than welcome to go back to the Windows CE version list or the device selection list and start again and do so as many times as you require.

Can I get a copy of the H/PC:Update database on CD?

No. The downloads listed in H/PC:Update are not licensed to HPC:Factor to see. Under international law it would be illegal for HPC:Factor or any individual or organisation to profit from the sale of these downloads.

I would like to contribute / Can I submit content for inclusion on H/PC:Update?

We would very much welcome your input into the H/PC:Update software archive. As a community site, with the help of the community we can make the repository even better.

If you have files to offer or information to add to a listing, please contact the HPC:Factor Webmaster.

Can I link to H/PC:Update?

Yes, you are more than welcome to link to H/PC:Update from your website, however due to our database protection systems and the advanced code being used by H/PC:Update, you will not be able to directly link to update content for any specific device. Please link to the H/PC:Update home page at the following Perma-Link URL:

http://www.hpcfactor.com/qlink/?linkID=176

This link will never change, ensuring that any link through to us will not become broken from your website.

Why can't I copy download URL's from H/PC:Update

Download link copying - often known as hot-linking - is something we frown upon because put simply; it costs us money while you benefit.

HPC:Factor is a community resource, and as such if you want to make use of our content, we ask that we get something in return: namely a visitor to our website and their awareness of us as an organisation.

We believe that this is a fair system, and if you are a fellow Windows CE / Handheld PC website we offer you the ability to submit your own website in for inclusion in the Handheld PC Community Directory so that we can offer you a link back to your own website.
