Overview:

The purpose of this software is the update of WebPanel software-components such as Bootloader, operating system as well as further data areas.

The software components that need to be updated can be selected via a suitable configuration (in the following called “Images”). In case a WebPanel is connected, the software automatically carries out a version check of all components and transfers all current images to the WebPanel.

Important:
Please also read the update guide, which you will find enclosed to your software package.

Description of the update program
a) Condition of the PC
- PC with serial cable of Docking station at COMx
- WIN 95/98/NT or 2000 is running on the PC
- The update software is running on the PC and is constantly waiting that the WebPanel is sending its switching-on code

b) Cycle of the update
Put the WebPanel into the docking station.

Switch on the WebPanel, the Bootloader of the WebPanel then sends the switching-on code to the PC.

The PC thereupon reads the partition chart of the WebPanel and examines if an update is possible and reasonable, i. e. if the PC version is newer than those of the WebPanel and if an update without loss of the private data is possible.

If so, the update is started automatically and at the end it goes back in the waiting position. At the end the WebPanel restarts automatically.

If an update is not reasonable or not possible the PC program sends a message which must be confirmed by pressing a key. The user can choose if the update shall be continued or broken off. If cancellation is chosen, the PC goes into waiting position; the WebPanel is switched on.

c) Behavior during faulty operation
The update procedure cannot be interrupted. If this happens anyhow (e. g. by interrupting the communication connection) the PC program gives out an appropriate error message which must be confirmed by the user by pressing a key. After that the PC goes into a waiting position again. Also after an error it is tried to restart the WebPanel on the software side again.

If the transmission was interrupted without permission the old operating system remains operative in the WebPanel. Depending on the version of the Bootloader either a RESET must be carried out (up to V.3.12) or the WebPanel restarts after switching on (starting from V.3.13).

If the device is taken out of the docking station during the new operating system is written in the Flash (after completed transmission), errors may occur if the battery of the WebPanel is not charged sufficiently. If the programming process breaks off due to undervoltage an incomplete operating system is in the Flash, a normal restart of the device is no longer possible.

A power off (see manual of the WebPanel) can possibly be executed and a retry of the update procedure can be carried out, otherwise the device needs to be returned.

d) Configuration
Menu option “Settings/Communications...”:
“Serial Port”: The serial interface that can be supervised!

The following part is only for authorised persons:

Menu option “Settings/Bootloader...”:

“Temporary Bootloader”: Name of the file, which contains a temporary Bootloader! (For updating old devices; according to standard v312a.slf).

“Temporary RAM boot loader”: Name of file, which contains a temporary RAM-Bootloader. (For updating very old devices; according to standard m310a.ram)

Menu option “Settings(Images...”:

A dialogue appears in its middle an entry exists for each of the 16 possible partitions. In each of these entries it is written down whether an image for this partition exists and, if yes, which one.

To add an image, click on “Add” and choose a file. If this file is a valid WebPanel-image, the image-information will be read out and shown. The image appears in the list under the entry of the partition saved in the image. To remove an image, choose the image and click “Remove”. To force an update, also if the version numbers are identically, click on the appropriate image and select “Change Update Mode”, so that in the column “Update forced” in the appropriate entry “yes” appears. This makes sense for e. g. FlashFX-Disks, whose version number does not change also for changed contents. (Condition 27.04.2001)

The settings are overtaken with “OK”, rejected with “Cancel”.

e) Possible utilisation and example
The program is configured in such way that there exists for each possible software component an entry in the image-chart. These entries refer to files on the local hard disk or a net drive assembly. This configuration is carried out exactly once.

If new software components become available, they will be copied under the same name and at the same place, so that older software components are overwritten. The program recognises this (possibly after conclusion of an up-to-date running upgrade) and updates its internal charts so that the new software components are available for the next upgrade procedure. Under these conditions (same name for the new files, no images for partitions not configured so far) the software does not have to be configured with available more current software components and not terminated and restarted.

Example:
The following, engaged part is only for authorised persons:

1. Configuration
“Add” c:/images/bootldr.img (more current bootloader)
“Add” C:/images/wince.img (most current operating system)
“Add” c:/images/publicfx.img (most current Public FlashFX-Disk)
“Change Update Mode” for FlashFX Disk

2. With available updated operating system:
Copy the image file (e.g. nktr380a.nbz) under the name “wince.img” in the listing “c:/images”.

3. With available updated Bootloader:
Copy the image file (e.g. v313a.img) under the name “bootldr.img” in the listing “c:/images”.

4. With available updated FlashFX-Disk
Copy the images file (e.g. flashfx.img) under the name “publicfx.img” in the listing “c:/images”.

Windows CE Compatibility:
Windows CE 3.00 (Handheld PC 2000), Windows CE .net 4.10, Windows CE .net 4.20
