Overview:

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Windows® CE Edition (SQL Server CE) version 2.0 is the compact database for rapidly developing applications that extend enterprise data management capabilities to mobile devices. SQL Server CE is a powerful tool that makes it easy to develop mobile applications by supporting familiar Structured Query Language (SQL) syntax and providing a development model and API consistent with SQL Server.

The SQL Server CE engine exposes an essential set of relational database features, such as an optimizing query processor and support for transactions and assorted data types, while maintaining a compact footprint that preserves precious system resources. Remote data access and merge replication ensure that data from SQL Server databases is delivered reliably, can be manipulated offline, and can be synchronized later to the server, making SQL Server CE ideal for mobile and wireless environments.

SQL Server CE 2.0 is designed to integrate with the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework* by means of Microsoft Visual Studio® .NET, simplifying database application development for smart devices. Using the new SQL Server CE data provider to manage code by means of the Common Language Runtime, mobile application developers can build highly extensible applications with offline data management capability for disconnected scenarios.

SQL Server CE extends the frontier of data management by delivering:

A familiar database platform for rapid development. The SQL Server family provides data management support and programmability across the enterprise from the largest servers to desktop workstations. SQL Server CE provides robust data management capabilities on mobile devices. By exposing a programming and operational model consistent with the rest of the SQL Server family, SQL Server CE ensures that organizations can easily integrate with existing systems and take advantage of existing development skills.
A compact yet capable relational database. Though devices are advancing rapidly, system resources such as available memory are often scarce, so it is critical that a relational database system be as compact as possible while still exposing essential functionality. SQL Server CE has a small memory footprint, delivering all of its functionality in approximately 1 megabyte (MB). Performance is enhanced with an optimizing query processor. A range of data types is supported to ensure flexibility, and 128-bit encryption is provided on the device for database file security.
Flexible data access. SQL Server CE enables straightforward, efficient access to enterprise data whether a device is always connected or intermittently connected to the computer running SQL Server. Remote data access exposes data in SQL Server 6.5, SQL Server 7.0, and SQL Server 2000 databases through remote execution of Transact-SQL statements and the ability to pull record sets to the client device for updating. When used with SQL Server 2000, SQL Server CE provides extended capabilities for synchronization through merge replication. Both of these data access technologies take advantage of Internet standards, including HTTP Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption, through integration with Internet Information Services (IIS). This approach ensures data can be accessed reliably and flexibly, even through firewalls.

Before installing SQL Server 2000 Windows® CE Edition (SQL Server CE) version 2.0, you must complete the following steps:

Review the system requirements.
Obtain and install Microsoft eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0.
Make sure you have at least one of the following Software Development Kits (SDKs):
Pocket PC SDK (Windows CE 3.0). These are included in the eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0 product files. These kits are needed for ADOCE 3.1 to install successfully.
Handheld PC 2000 SDK. You can download the Handheld PC 2000 SDK from either of the following sites:
U.S. Version
Japanese version

Note: Because there is no emulator available, the readme file contains information on how to purchase and set up a CEPC for development of Handheld PC 2000 applications. For more information on Handheld PC 2000, visit the Microsoft Mobile Devices site.

Ensure that you have Microsoft ActiveSync 3.5.
Verify that you have Administrator rights on the target system and that the Administrators group has Change permission on the installation directory.
Obtain the SQL Server CE version 2.0 installation files.
Run the Server Tools installation on the computer that will act as the Internet Information Services (IIS) server.
Run the Development Tools installation on the computer you will use for SQL Server CE development. This process installs the Windows CE Data Access 3.1 components and then the SQL Server CE components.
Note that all versions use English during setup, but will install localized Microsoft Data Access Components 2.6 (MDAC).

System Requirements:

A Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Windows® CE Edition (SQL Server CE) 2.0 development environment includes up to four systems: a system running SQL Server¹, a system running Internet Information Services (IIS)², a development system³, and a Windows CE–based device4. You can use the same computer for the SQL Server system, the IIS system, and the development system.

IIS system:
Microsoft Windows Server™ 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition; Windows NT® 4.0 with Service Pack 5 (SP5) or later; Windows 2000; or Windows XP

Development system:
Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition; Windows 2000; or Windows XP

Windows CE–based devices:

For unmanaged (Native) applications:

Pocket PC 2000
Pocket PC 2002
Pocket PC 2003
Pocket PC Phone Edition
Handheld PC 2000 (HP/C 2000)
Other embedded devices that use Windows CE 4.1 and 4.2

For Microsoft .NET Compact Framework (managed) applications:

Pocket PC 2000
Pocket PC 2002
Pocket PC 2003
Pocket PC Phone Edition
Other embedded devices that use Windows CE 4.1 and 4.2

IIS system:
120 megabytes (MB) of available hard disk space

Development system:
30 MB of available hard disk space

Windows CE–based devices:
1–3 MB of available hard disk space depending on processor type, operating system version, and components installed

CD-ROM drive is required if installing SQL Server CE from the Microsoft Visual Studio® .NET CD

¹ SQL Server CE supports both remote data access (RDA) and merge replication to the SQL Server system.
² SQL Server CE RDA and merge replication communicate with SQL Server through IIS. You can run IIS and SQL Server on the same computer.
³ The computer you use to develop your Windows CE-based application must have either:

Microsoft eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0 installed with at least one of the following software development kits (SDKs): Palm-size PC SDK, Handheld PC Pro SDK, or Pocket PC SDK for native (unmanaged) application development.

Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Compact Framework for managed application development.

4 This is the device on which your Windows CE–based application is deployed.
