Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else I have not been able to find it.

I recently was given a 620lx which I have come to find out is going to be a huge pain for wireless networking. I have checked the HCL and found that there are only a few cards on the list that will even work with 2.0. This has seriously limited me in being able to actually find a card, i have checked all the usual places and have even been searching the old parts from other CE devices here at work.... and no luck.

Naturally not wanting to ever spend money if I don't have to I have been on a quest for a cheap and working wifi card. Unfortunatley I have no idea what is what when it comes to CE devices. I know that with many other operating systems it is possbile to run a driver that may not have been written either for that device of that OS. I seems to me that this should also be the case with CE [or it might not be and I might just be talking out my ass].

Does anyone know if there are any third party drivers/apps that will allow me to run unsopported drivers from another OS or third party source? (if linux can run WinXP drivers then by all rights we should be able to figure something out here)

Also if I run the NSP and SP1 will I be able to use devieces that were designed for 2.1 but not supported under 2.0 due to lack of networking functionality?

I am afraid the answer here as one generic tone.

No.

Unlike the transistion from Windows 95, to 98 to Millennium, thigns between CE versions are radically different.
While you can sometimes use a driver from a lower version on a newer one (2.11 driver on a 3.00 device) the opposite is not true.

As you are at the bottom end of the networking food chain, this isn't going to provide you any benefits.
On the second point, CE is a scaled down version of Windows, and does not support the same API (programming calls) that Windows does, neither can it address the Windows files in the first place (different CPU).

Ok just came upon something that I need varifacation on. If you look at the HCL it has the hawking CF100w as a supported device for CE2.0. It uses the prism 2.5 chipset which is shared by at rather nice list of other devices by a number of other manufactures. Will the drivers from the CF100w work on any of the prism? As far as I know this should work. The controller for the pc card slot and a CF slot are the same (at least on my device) so the only problem that I can think of is that of addressing for the differnent ports. Anyone have any input?

While there is a CE2.00 driver file, I have it right here. I have never had a Prism 2.5 card to test it with.
The driver's are reference drivers, however as I have not been able to test it out, I have not been brave enough to state it.

I was thinking of buying a netgear ma401 ... it is a 16bit pcmcia card with the prism2.5 chipset. I just didnt wanna buy it and it not work cause I dont have anything that needs one besides the 620lx. But at the price I may just buy one to test it out.

I have a fairly large list of cards with the prism2.5 if anyone thinks it is worth posting

There are a couple of docs on the forums already which have a godo chipset list, but by all means please post ayay, anything to make it easier for people is a good thing.

The NetGear MA401 is not one I would recommend. Mainly because people have a lot of trouble setting it up in the first place. While people have got it running under CE using H0006, if you can find a Prism 2.5 which is already on the HCL and is marked as compatible with CE 2.11, I would say your odds were better - my personal opinion here.

Well I decided to get the netgear and just try it out. I found it at tigerdirect.com for $12.99 so if this doesnt work I'm only out a few bucks.

Anyways here is the list of cards that have the PRISM CHIPSET

SOME CARDS in this list WILL DEFINATELY NOT WORK because they are cardbus [32bit] not a PCcard [16bit].

This is not an HCL just a list of cards that share this chipset.

Ok so I just got the new parts in for my 620. But I am having a bit of an issue with the drivers (who would have guessed right?). I downloaded the drivers from the HCL (and another source) but I every time I try to run the setup program it tells me it is not a winCE 2.0 program but if I run it on my desktop it tells me that I need winCE 2.0.

So whats the deal? Is it a CE 2.0 program or not?

If you can't answer that, then can anyone tell another method for getting the drivers installed. I don't know a thing about CE all my windows knowledge is for the PC versions.

Donavan,

The driver installer is invariably going to be a host installer, so running it on the H/PC will do no good.

Is the error message saying you need Windows CE 2.0, or Windows CE Services 2.0?

If the latter, please head into the Sync Software section above and download ActiveSync 3.8, then give it another go.

C:aime,

It is saying not a valid win ce application. Which leads me to believe that it is an install file to be used through the sync. The problem here is that I dont have a sync cable. I am still trying to locate one through some sources i have, but currently no cord. Is there anyway to fool the system installing with out the sync?

I tried the Belkin drivers and they should work but it gives me an error about the \windows\mfcce20.dll being in use or in ROM. I checked the directory and the file is there. So is there a way to get it to look to another copy of the files rather than the one on my ROM

The belkin drivers have an installer fault. I have told them about it and they refused to even acknowledge my emails. Their loss.

You need to get the cabs out of the host installer:
http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/s/0049.asp

While there are steps that you can take over and above those listed in the article, they are of a very technical level, and differ between the installer wrapper (InstallShield, InstallShield CE, MSI and so on)

The best thing to do is just to install ActiveSync, and fish for the CABs under Program Files.

I have tried to unpackage the drivers using winrar, it works but there is still a problem. The only SH3.cab file that I can find in any of the driver packs that is compatible with the prism is the one for the belkin which crashes out. I have been searching for days for any SH3 cabs that are for a prism ... supposedly there is a pack out there from the orginal manufacturer but I can't find it either. Did I miss it somewhere ?

Does anyone have Prism drivers for CE 2.0 in a SH3 cab ?

C:amie, you are completely awesome !!!

Thank you so much for all the work you have put into this... as soon as i am home I'll try the new driver pack out. Once i get everything on my 620 up and working 100% I want to do a write up on this to fill in some of the grey areas for the newbies. What is the procedure for such things here? Should I just post a complete write up in here or send it for addition to the support and tuts?
