As I said in the editorial that this thread is referencing. It's CE3 or higher only now. Which potentially cuts 2.0 and Pro users out of Longhorn and out of 64-bit.

This is the boards 17,000th post

I think I might grab a USB Hard Drive and install Linux on it for dual booting Windows XP and a Linux flavor . Is there a third party application for syncing with H/PCs on Linux?

The only one I know much of in SyncCe (or synce), and it worked.. ish. Lots of issues, or so I hear.

I have another question about AS 4... How come it is speculative that AS 4 (FINAL) will only work with Win CE 5 and up? What about CE 4 and Windows Mobile 2003?

Thanks,

Joseph

Oh I hate being the bad guy all the time...

Truth be told, what percentage of ActiveSync users actually sync over the network? And of those, how many would critically need it? You get the point.

As for the security issue... I think I can understand it. Currently the sync does not require any authentication (correct me if I'm wrong). The CE device just asks and your computer says "no problemo!" and syncs with it. And we all know that any 3rd party sync add-on can possibly create arbitrary files... This becomes a pretty big security risk

Your assumption on the need of ActiveSync over the network is wrong.

I have a number of handheld computers on my desk over here that can only be connected via the network.

Using Visual Studio 2005 to develop .NET Compact Framework 2.0 solutions forced me to upgrade to ActiveSync version 4.1.
And this in turn means I cannot deploy and debug my software on the above mentioned network connected devices.
