I've finished all 18 episodes of Caprica, finally.
I started on 2nd Jan. I'm afraid that I wasn't sold. It's taken me this long because I've had to force myself to get through it. So, regrettably, I can't say that I feel it added anything to the BSG universe, nor was it especially compelling. I think thatthe writers really let the cast and the franchise down, just as they did with the "God did it" ending of BSG2003. The addition of the Adama family was unnecessary and broadly it was like watching a retcon of the USS Enterprise from the original Star Trek; pretending but not pretending that the technological differences aren't relevant.
They missed the opportunity to explore broader geo-political or social themes by jumping back on the Baltar one true god band-waggon. They could have explored the poly-theist universe of the 12 colonies and given a long view over the rise of Cylon self-awareness. What we got left with was Cylons have little bits of Zoe in their code and Zoe had mono-theistic leanings.
They also screwed up the time line. BSG 2003 is 50 years after the first Cylon war, yet at the end of S01E18 we see ~3/yo Bill Adama, pre-war. Galactica should have already been built and the Cylon war takes place only a couple of years after introduction to the market. It all feels compressed just so they could introduce Bill Adama into the story 'for fans'.
They completely forgot about closing out Tamara Adama's arc too.
Still Genevieve Buechner and Magda Apanowicz
Possibly Better Call Saul S04 next
