Greetings,

Which CompactFlash/PCMCIA WiFi card would you recommend for an IBM z50 Workpad HPC? It has Windows CE 2.1 and a MIPS processor. Besides, it comes with Pocket Internet Explorer on the ROM, so it was meant to have internet access.

Thanks in advance

I use an Orinoco Gold (Agere chipset) PCMCIA card on my MobilePro 780 (MIPS, CE 2.11/HPC Pro). Works great and comes with a nice configuration utility.

Wow, thanks for the prompt answers. Well then, the Orinoco Gold PCMCIA card.

Is this the one? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370151695976&fro...

That is a ComboCard which is 32-bit (they typically have the easily spottable gold connector) I believe and HPCs only accept 16-bit PCMCIA cards.

There are Proxim Orinoco card drivers in the HCL, but you have to make sure that any Proxim model you find on eBay is listed in there to be sure it will work with Windows CE. Do a search for "orinoco" in the HCL and you'll find the Orinoco cards that are and aren't compatible with CE.

That's the newer Proxim version, which even in its 16-bit (PCMCIA) version is actually not as reliable as the older Lucent and Agere versions, particularly with CE 2.11 devices.

Look for cards like the ones here:

Actually I'm selling two 16-bit PCMCIA cards that would suit your needs (might need to be flashed for 128-bit WEP). Check out the hpcBay

Cheers

Good morning,

Following Half-Saint's advice, I looked for his post on hpcbay, and this are the cards he is selling:

- Linksys WCP11 v2.5 WiFi 802.11b
- Enterasys RoamAbout CSIBD-AB 802.11b (sticker says 40-bit WEP)

Which one would be best for the z50?

Thanks for all your replies and interest in my problem.

If I had to choose a wifi card for my HPC's, I would choose an Orinoco Gold for more then three reasons ...

1. It is compatible with a vast range of vintage HPC's, ranging from CE 2.0 onwards.
2. It seems that everyone is recommending it along with the Linksys card, and
3. It is not hard to find, on Ebay there are still cards sold brand new for less then £15.

... 4. Just desire that name ... 'look! I've got an Orinoco GOLD!'

With users that only use CE 3.0 or CE 4.2 for their HPC's, a Linksys card would make more sense as this has an easy setup configuration, more modern I think, and is plug and play on CE 4.2 models.

Hope this helps choosing a wifi card.

I don't have an Orinoco Gold yet, but I will get one sometime cause I want Internet!

Once you get your hardware working, don't forget to vote for its compatibility in the HCL so that others can see that it works with the z50 - and please submit any hardware that we don't already have

Absitively - if it's the Lucent or Agere version. (The Lucent WaveLAN uses the same chipset and will work as well.) Use the WaveLAN driver - the link is in the HCL:
