| Equipping our old HPC's with 'Internal' or 'Built-In' WiFi has been my pursuit for some time. My previous focus has been on HP J7xx and NEC MP900 (C ). 3Com card was the best for J7xx and Prism-based one with an external antenna was for MP900 (C ).
Now, Summit+Dell (Socket too ) is the universal solution for any HPC's (CE 2.11 to CE 4.xx ) with PCMCIA slot. No protrusion at all!
Tests and pictures will be shown shortly once I receive the customized PCMCIA to CF adapter tomorrow.
Stay tuned. Edited by CAuser 2009-11-03 12:32 PM

| Customized adapter? You mean a really short one? Where did you get it? I want one too! |

| A few months ago, I ordered one from WAV in IL but they never ship it. I then placed another order last week, they shipped it this time. This customized adapter was originally designed for SDC-CF10G CF WiFi module and has a slot that is deeper than a standard CF adapter by 18.1mm. The price is $20 plus $9.95 S/H. You can call them if they still have more.

| It's on the delivery truck. I can't wait to test it on HPC's. |

| 18mm would be just long enough to conceal a CF Wifi card entirely...my Samsung Magiclan measures 56mm in length and part of that is plastic case which I could remove giving me another 2mm hidden. |

| Right, Summit's SDC-CF10G is 54.5mm long. The adapter was designed to house SDC-CF10G completely just like a normal adapter that houses a CF memory card (36.4mm long). One thing to note is the thickness of a CF WiFi card. It must not be significantly thicker than 5mm as a PCMCIA slot only allows 5mm-thick adapter plus a little space that allows easy insertion and removal. Another thing is we assume there is no complete metal shielding at the opening of the PCMCIA slot. Otherwise, the shielding would block WiFi signals. We'll see how it performs.

| Well, Skeye.pad is out as its PCMCIA slot has little space in addition to 5mm for the adapter and so is Jornada 7xx. SIMpad's PCMCIA slot is barely large enough at the opening to completely hold the combo. The other candidate is Netbook Pro. Does its PCMCIA slot has a relatively large opening like MP900C's? So, a really thin CF WiFi card helps.

| Have you tried any testing to see how much of a signal loss there is with the CF card embedded into the body of the Mobilepro versus one that protrudes? |

| Yes, the NB Pro's PCMCIA slot is slightly bigger. |

| I just used MP with driver in ROM (Cmonex 2) to test it. Once it's connected, it seems good. The driver WLAGS46 is probably not the best for Dell 1180 WLAN CF. I'll do a side-by-side comparison with the same setup (I do have 2 Dell CF cards and many MP's) but different CF adapter. |

I measured MP's opening. It's 6mm in height. Does NBP has 6mm for my thinnest CF WiFi? Does NBP has similar plastic portion at the opening above the slot instead of metal shielding all over? If so, NBP can have perfect CF WiFi inside just like MP. |

| Looks like 6 mm at the narrowest point. It widens out on the other end to close to 7 mm. Looks like plastic about 10 mm deep all the way around. |

| Thanks for the info. I may get a NBP soon for the sake of more compete collection of HPC's and 'internal' WiFi.
