For many months now, I have been desperately trying to find a Windows CE 1.0-compatible landline/analogue modem, in PCMCIA format if possible...

Obviously I've had no luck, which is why I've turned to you guys for help!

Anyone know where I can buy a Windows CE 1.0-compatible landline/analogue modem (preferably in PCMCIA format), new if possible?

mmm, i dunno much about CE1, but i think this should do it
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/comm/2212d/specs.htm

3com 3cxm556 modem. hey, it's even compatible with good ole' DOS. It's back from those days in which modems were truly modems, not just these "line pickers" we've now, so it should be compatible with CE1.

for buying it, you could try this link
http://www.saitekinc.com/product_info.php?cPath=89&products_id=645
they ship int'l

Hope this helps

I checked the HCL, and even E-Mailed 3/4 of them...

But the result was always the same- the product was either no longer available or I didn't receive a reply!

That 3Com modem listed above doesn't state that it is compatible with Windows CE!

I might have to E-Mail them...

Most if not all PCMCIA modems will not be low voltage, and will quite simply massacre your AA's.

On the flip side, virtually any PCMCIA modem will work in CE, it just needs to understand Hayes AT commands - command any modern Windows modem dials using.

Mmm, maybe it's not listed as CE compatible, but i've been using two of them, with HPC Pro and HPC 2000 units, and they works just out of the box. besides, it's cheap, so you could try to use one of that kind with your CE1 unit. i'm almost sure it'll work.

C:Amie - Not all PCMCIA modems are standard. specifically talking about 3com's. lot of them are labelled as "Winmodem" (i think they're either the pink or the yellow ones). those are not true modems, they're softmodems, and are definitively NOT compatible without a specific driver.

Hope this helps

Stop recommending 3Com PC Cards then

Seriously though, if you plan on really using it on dial-up you want a low voltage AT modem, preferably low voltage CF. As a long standing 300 series user, 5v cards can and will cause you problems.

I'm really looking for something that is GUARANTEED to work with Windows CE 1.0...

I know computers, but about the most technical thing I know about modems is how they actually work and the various speed standards; modem strings, ATT commands, etc... That means nothing to me.

Furthermore, I'm severelly limited on money and only have occasional access to a computer...

Fortunately for the modem gurus in this forum, computers and the like come naturally to me, so if someone explains how I could use a PCMCIA modem as a generic modem and/or what settings I need to put where, I should be able to follow along quite easily WITHOUT needing step-by-step instructions...

Easy, with CE modem drivers are non existent. They use a driver layer called Unimodem, which detects and Hayes compatiblt modem, mounts it and reads the PnP ID to let you ID it.

Simply run through remote networking and you'll see it in the drop box

So if I'm understanding you correctly, I don't actually need drivers... If the modem is "Hayes" compatible, it should just auto-install and appear during the setup of a dial-up connection.

Am I right?
