| Hello all,
I am sorry to report that, as I predicted, it does not look like my server setup here is going to be able to cope with the site plus everything else it needs to do for anything other than the short term.
For some obscure reason the outage of the last hour was caused by the SQL Server deciding to operate on a different planet while also deciding that it couldnt possibly ask the operating system to provide it with a new thread to process the web server log-in.
Net result, 500 error.
The difference between the current arangement and the Florida arrangement is that the server is doing other things, not just HPC:Factor things.
So there question I post you you all is: Do we get another server and are community members willing to contribute towards that through donations? |

| Well, you know my answer: I'll donate what I can (though it may not be much right now as I'm stretched a bit thin at the moment ). |

| I can offer a mirror for downloading files (like drivers etc. ), I have a lot of bandwith for which I pay for and it's unused Dunno If that could help. |

| Raul,
Mirroring is certainly something which I have been considering. Mirror hosts would need to have 24/7 up time, access to TCP ports 80 and 21 and have a static IP address. |

| What is it you need for a new server...hardware? |

| It's all down to hardware, but not just hardware it needs to be capable hardware and it needs some data redundancy.
Unfortuantely the existing server that HPC:Factor has landed on is well behind the times in terms of its capability, it's only got a 800FSB, doesn't support 64-bit and can only support 4GB RAM. That's the problem, it's now too congested because of the database i/o. |

| I would help some. I don't use my 720 much anymore. But when I did, I lived on this site. Maybe you should do a poll, and see what you could expect from donations. |

| Beige box we're probably talking >£700, retail OEM we're talking >£1500.
In case anyone here thinks that I'm being miserly by asking for donations and not contributing myself. I've already chipped in two windows server licenses and a SQL 2008 license. I'll chip in more myself if I can. |

Port 21 could be hard to offer cos I don't have anonymous access to ftp. |

Maybe you could consider Linux and php? |

| The mirror doesn't need an anoymous FTP access, secured is fine.
Only if I want to rewrite 10 years of Windows based programming |

| yeah, as contribution I can:
- try to give a mirror for some files (my own site, it's of course linux, but I guess I can do hosting for some files. )
- send donation |

| Thanks
I will definately be talking to people about mirrors once things are settled and can program something up to handle that. |

| 'Course, then we'll have to change our slogan: "HPC:Factor - it's not a myth, we do it with mirrors!" |
