I've noticed that a number of file types don't seem to have an associated icon, for example a shortcut (.URL) shows as the default Windows logo. I'm sure these can be fixed in the registry, but I messed up last time and it caused a few problems

Is there an easier way, or are there any applications that will change icons for file types (and perhaps file associations as well)?

Old question...do a search on this site for "edit icons" or "change icons" and you will soon learn it is not an easy task as CE icons do not behave the same as desktop icons. They are not seperate .ico files and are embedded in the application.

OK, thank you, I found quite a few [note to self - search for FAQs!]:

Editing Icons
Possible to change icons in CE 2.11
Change Icons?
Change Shortcut Icons
A way to change the default icons?
How to change Icons size

I'll check them out and report back...

OK, I'm back. From what I've read, there are utilities for and creating editing icons.

I obviously didn't phrase my question properly. What I want to do is to use an existing icon for a file type that has none. Looks like it's back to the registry then

If there's no icon resource file embedded in the application's executable file, then you won't be able to do it through the registry.

Could I not use the icon for one application to provide an icon for another?

Just noticed something odd.

I created a desktop shortcut to a .EXE in \Windows, the icon was OK. Then I renamed it by removing the "Shortcut ..." (I've always hated that) and the icon went to the Windows default.

I don't know why, but if you edit the name of a shortcut, you have to type the ".lnk" extension or it won.t work. As soon as you edit it, the extension disappears. Took me awhile to figure that one out.

I usually select "Hide file extensions" under View -> Options to avoid this.

You may be able to have the registry point to another file for the icon, but you'll need to know the offset of the icon bitmap in the file.

I've got file extensions hidden. I've worked like that since Vista, and I'm getting used to it, slowly.
