In a nutshell, when Microsoft started writing operating system, like Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows XP....they evolved in just that order.

At the same time, back in the Windows 95 era, they created Windows CE which was an operating system meant for devices with embedded cpus...a very limited, scaled down OS. It too evolved, Windows CE, CE 2.0, 2.11, 3, 4.1, 4.2, 5, 6, etc.

Your device should run most programs written for CE5....of which there are not many. You will read where people have added older device drivers and run some older CE programs on newer CE5 devices....but this is always a trial and error endeavor as variances in hardware and software are generally the rule rather than the exception.

One thing to realize is that any program written for a desktop machine will not run on a Windows CE device.
