The HPC:Factor distributed 3Com 589 series Driver is a popular topic of support.

Please use this forum to discuss drivers and driver problems for the 3C589 series PCMCIA Ethernet Adapter under HPC Pro.

More Info: CESD-H-0008

Please note: These drivers are BETA drivers and are final release

All potential 3C589x users - Please be aware that as of 2005 we recommend only the 3C589C model. Reports of success with the 3C589D have been sketchy.

Yes it is!

Congrats on the new forum...hopefully it'll be a bit simpler than the newsgroup.
I'm looking forward to being able to use the NIC with my Jornada... in the mean time, good luck to all of you who are working on it!

Thanks,

A very kind individual by the name of David Feldman is sending me a 2.11 based z50.

Once that arrives (and big thanks again to David) I'll be able to get a proper look at the 2.11 driver, and hopefully can sort out the problem that a lot of Jornada users are seeing.

I'm having problems to make work this driver on my Vadem Clio C-1050. I have a 3Com 3C589D wich belonged to my previous PDA (a Messagepad 130). I followed the instructions on that page to install the driver but it doesn't seem to do nothing. In system properties it appears as if the network card wasn't present.

Any suggestions? Any suggestions as wich PCMCIA network adapter I have to buy in case this does not have solution?

Volcano,

When you go into Network in control panel, is the 589 listed there?

Does the dongle light up / flash / do nothing?

You are using the Pro driver not the 2000 one right?

Ok, the z50 has arrived (thanks Dave).
The driver doesn't like 2.11 or 2.12 for some odd reason.

Give it to a 2.10 device and it's ok. Howver under the newer release the system probes the driver and promptly dropps out.

Now the MIPS driver that I'm testing against the z50 is a R3000 driver, where as the z50 has a R4000 CPU. Which could be playing a part in the process.

I'm not seeing any of the reported hardware chache getting carried away with itself and loading the driver in to all the available 99 slots.
I've not seen a hard reset issue that two people have mentioned.

Users have to understand that the drivers are modified by us through registry manipulation. The actual binary is a 3Com internal beta driver for CE 2.1. The same driver binary with different registry settings works under HPC2000 a-OK.

When testing ALWAYS have a full state backup.

Feedback here in the forum please, not via e-mail or PM. Thanks.

I bought a 3C589D card and downloaded the drivers. Followed the instructions and installed it, it hangs after you enter the 3C589.dll and the system hangs.

WHen I went to system settings, it didn't say anything about SP1 being installed so I figured what the heck.

I did a hard reset, installed SP1, soft reset, installed the driver, soft reset and then inserted the card. Entered the 3C589.DLL when prompted and the system hangs again.
The light on the dongle lights up (a short flicker and then it burns steady until I eject) and I know the port on my hub works.

I can't get the unit to do anything until I eject the card.

Anyone got any hints for me?

I have a Jornada 680e and the card just shows 3C589D on the front. It also says "For 10Base-T and Coax.

On the back is this info:

FCC ID: DF63C589D
PN: 16-0037-000 REV: A

That help any?

For what it's worth, I have tried it with 3 different dongles, 2 of which were working the last time I tried them in a laptop, si I am pretty confidant that the problem is not there.

It's the Combo version.

First a foremost, have a look at the config data. Hot off the press I just put this together, it provides you with the tools to get the data out of the EPROM:
http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/h/0022.asp

If you reset the chip and can provide me with all the configuration information as stated at the end. We can take it from there.

Thanks for the info, but my laptop is at work and doesn't have a floppy anyway. I guess I could burn a boot CD but with all the restrictions work puts on our Win2K machines, I wouldn't be surprised if they have locked out the ability to boot from a CD. Still, it is worth a shot.

I'll give it a try this week while I am out on vacation over thanksgiving.

Following a discussion, we are collating information on 3C589 cards here to see if we can work out a pattern for their use under HPC Pro.

Info on the two cards I'm using. Both work under 2.00 and HPC2000, but not under my z50 HPC Pro.

Card 1:

Front Face
"Dell Ethernet Card 10Base-T / 10Base-2 by 3Com. Parallel Tasking"

Back Plate:
"PCMCIA 2.1/2.1 and PC Card Standard, made in the USA"
FCC compliance data
FCC ID DF63C589C

EA=00A024B02580
(below) SN: 6EM1B0....

PN: 16-0036-000 REV: A

Card 2:

Front Face
"3Com Megahertz LAN
10 Mbps LAN
PC Card
3Com
Model 3CCE589EC"

Back Plate:
"Model 3CCE589EC
PC Card (5v, 16-bit)
FCC ID DF63C589C

EA=00105A90298D
(below) SN: 6QK290....

Hi
I know this is about HPC and the first card i my is also abot that. But I hope someone out there have about my two other PC Cards.

1. Dell Ethernet Card 10BASE-T/10BASE-2 by 3Com
Parallel Tasking PC CARD

Backside of the card:
PCMCIA 2.0/2.1 and The PC Card Standard
FCC ID: DF63C589D
EA = 006008830C2D
SN = 6KP1830C2D
PN:16 – 0088 – 000 REV:C

2. Dell Ethernet Card 10/100 BASE-TX by 3Com
Parallel Tasking PC CARD

Backside of the card:
Model 3CCFE575CT-D
EA = 000102E3F1FC
SN = 6ZX1E3F1FC
PN:16 – 0488 – 000 REV:A

3. Dell Ethernet Card 10/100 BASE-TX by 3Com
Parallel Tasking PC CARD

Backside of the card:
Model 3CCFE575BT-D
EA = 00104BF229C0
SN = 6NL1F229C0
PN:16 – 0142 – 000 REV:A

When I try to get same information about these three PC Cards from 3Com website I have to use the 3Com Product # “otherwise I don’t get any result” as following:

- Product #: 3C589D-TP for FCC ID: DF63C589D
- Product #: 3CCFE575CT for Model 3CCFE575CT-D
- Product #: 3CCFE575BT for Model 3CCFE575BT-D

I have drawn a parallel between the Dell product # and 3Com product # but I’m not so sure if these comparisons are correct. If the comparisons are not correct which are the products # for those three Dell Ethernet PC Cards?

Thanks!
Leon
