Thank you again for the advice rgisondi! Of course I have to accept things as they are, it looks like absolutely no chance for further improvement, I'm dealing with 10 years old technology.
In order to get flawless 3G connection I'll have to use the work around to get Jornada connected via wifi to my Huawei E5830 mobile Wifi router as highligted some month ago. The cost is that I'll have to carry 2 objects with me all the time, but the performance is good.
