| hello,
I've a SIMPAD SL4 on which I wan to to flash it clean with the bootloader & the WinCE4.1 image following the procedure found here on the supportpages but I encounter after 2 days trying still the same errors.
The problems are as follows :
- if I connect (serial ) with hyperterminal I've to set the speed to 115200baud instead of 38400 or I'll get "chinese" on the PC screen
... strange & not as the procedure stated. With 115200baud the output on the PC screen is perfect readable.
- if I run serload with the bootloader or even with the WinCE image the screen is again full of so called chinese signs. So I think that also here the speed is wrong but I can't force serload to use another speed ... or can I ?
what am I doing wrong ?
its on a Windows XP Pro PC (an old pentium 4 ) but I've tried on 4 other PC's with the latest Intel CPUs & W7 etc all the same result.
the serial cable is the original serial cable out of the box.
the reason I want to flash it back to the factory settings with CE becaus my son has put Linux on it a few years ago.
sincerely,

| anybody ? yes I know it is an old device
Any suggestions/help is much appreciated!
Now we've managed that the Linux (gustrom Opie ) is not even working anymore so there is nothing on the screen of the Simpad when booting. When you connect serial with HT you can follow the bootsequence but at the end it states that there is "no image to boot from" (or something in that sence ) & it will go in monitoring mode with a BOOT> prompt
If I've to make some screenshots or send more info please let me know.
Greetings,
Marc

| Are you sure that you have the correct flow control settings as well? Are you using USB Serial or true serial? |

| I use the serial (RS232) cable on COM1
Settings for this port in Hyperterminal are : 8bit, 1 stopbit, no parity, X-on/X-Off
Speed : 115200
Are those settings right ?
Tx! |

| Yes, it looks OK.
What happens if you try it without flow control?
If you try to flash on 115200, what happens? |

| do you mean using serload ? I can't set speed or flowcontrol manual when using serload, or can I ? Are those not hardcoded in serload ?
Or do I have to fiddle with the settings in de hardwaredevice manager of windows, I've done that also but same result.

| You set them in the hyperterminal configuration...
If you are fiddling with device manager in Windows, you should not be. Uninstall the device you've changed and reboot the system. |

| ok just to be sure I understand you correctly
When flashing an bootloader of WINCE image to the SIMPAD I have to use serload (following the procedure on the board ), right ?
But are you saying that I've to set the COM1 settings (before I start serload I suppose ) in hyperterminal ?

| yep,
first tried using serload (& the images ) - with the chinese signs result ...
then tried to get connected with Hyperterminal to proceed to erase flash rom as described. But with the mentioned settings I'll get also chinese except when I set the speed to 115200 but I don't get the "Siemens bootloader 2.5.3 screen" where I have to select "y" to erase ...
so back to square one ?

| Oh you are going from linux to CE, wrong boot loader. You have the Li loader on it.
CESDH0032 is the CE3->4 process.
The linux boot loader uses 115200, accounting for your observation
Do you have the bootloader rom file? It is in CESDH0052 if you don't. |
