Installing programs on CE 1.0 HPC Explorer/ActiveSync question

With my first CE 1.0 device (MobilePro 400) I never bothered to try installing apps because without a backlight I can't see the screen most of the time making it mostly useless.

Now that I have a Compaq C120+ that has a backlight I'd like to know how to install applications. Can I install HPC Explorer on the same computer that has ActiveSync that I use for CE 2.0+ devices or does it need a seperate computer? If it has to be seperate I can create a new virtual Windows XP machine in Virtual PC.
