My grand daughter in Scotland sent me a UbiSurfer 9 for my birthday. After charging it for the required 4 hours I turned it on and was met with a white screen saying Ubisurfer Ubiquitous Surfer or something like that.

I tried pressing the reset button but there didn't seem to be one therre, so my system has been stuck in this mode for several days now.

I don't know a great deal about computers and don't want to crush my grand-daughter by telling her the system she sent me was a dud, so can anyone tell me how I can get this system operational again?

I should perhaps say I tried ringing and emailing the makers Datawind and got no replies to my emails and no answer from my calls other than "all our operatives are busy at the minute".

thank you

Resetting the UbiSurfer 9 is done by holding down the power button for a few seconds. Unfortunately, this appeared to be a common problem with this model. Sometimes you can get it to boot properly into the Windows CE desktop, but in some cases it never boots properly. That may have something to do with Datawind not responding - my guess is they closed up shop. See this thread for some of our other members' experiences, including my own (fortunately I still have three that have been working fine):

I'd still suggest trying a soft reset by holding down the power button as I've described above - you might get lucky. You can also try leaving it on until the battery runs down and letting it sit for a few days with the battery empty before charging it up again - that's worked for me once or twice (though the problem may recur as it did for me).

Thank you for your reply. I tried holding down the power button as you suggested but the screen kept switching between a black 'off' screen and the ubisurfer white logo screen - a bit like a flashing on off on off on off sequence.

i will try to drain the battery over the coming week and let you know if recharging it proves any more successful.

thanks again.

Well, tried draining the battery and rebooting - no joy, problem remains.

Tried rebooting holding down the power key = nope, that didn't work either.

Datawind continue not to return my phone calls or respond to my email.

Guess I've no option but to toss this into the trash bin.

Won't be the first one to end up there.... Make sure the power button isn't sticking down pushing the power switch on the motherboard...
