| Hi all - I pulled my NEC MobilePro 900C out of storage for the first time in a few years. It worked fine when I put it away, but using it now, the keyboard has gone totally nuts. Many keys now, when pressed, output their character plus some other character. For example, in WordPad (or any application), when I press 'a' it types 'as'. When I press '1' it types '12', and 'o' types 'o.'. Pressing Enter types '1' and then does a carriage return. It's so weird. I performed a hard reset, and that didn't change anything.
Any idea what might have happened? I assume it's some hardware issue, and it's maddening to think just sitting on a shelf for four years (plugged in, even) broke it somehow. |

| Best case, the flexi PCB connector of the motherboard is lose. Worse case there is a damage/shorted/cracked/dry solder trace on the keyboard PCB or motherboard. If it's the former, unscrew her and reseat the orange ribbon cable and all will be well. |

| Excellent advice… though the 900 is a pain in the butt to get the ribbon cable seated well… |

| Then get some preparation-h, cortisone cream, and then for the electronics: some sticky tape and/or hot glue. |

| Yeah, and it must've been a British brew since he "spilt" it. |

| I've seen this kind of problem myself, in a full-size classic computer I'm working on.
My knee jerk would also be the keyboard ribbon cable.
Specifically, make sure that it's not cross-seated in the socket to short any of the pins together.
(Sadly in my project computer this is NOT the problem and I have a lot of troubleshooting ahead of me.) |
