I'm just curious, I have a ton of handhelds with a wide variety of operating system. My favorite being WinCE and Psion's EPOC and I've found that nearly all my devices are usable in some fashion twenty-something years after being released. One example, I love my old Psion 5 for writing without distractions.

But I'm curious. Let's say we exclude any handhelds made after 2005, which handheld (any OS, form factor) do you think is THE most usable in 2018?

This should include (but isn't limited to):

  • Text editing

  • Music

  • Internet capabilities for the browser

  • Internet capabilities for emails

  • WIFI connectivity (i.e. how difficult it is to get it online using modern security.)

An easy choice would be the MobilePro 900. I'm able to get it up and running and do nearly everything listed above. (Wifi is still iffy due to new(er) security protocols.) But using Opera and nPOPuk solves at least how I browse the net and get emails. Music is good too, with a CF port and headphone out, I've got a music player when I can't use my phone.

For me, the handheld I have which can fit your criteria is: Sony Tablet P.

Text Editing: Possible, there are many apps for this as it runs Android 4.0
Music: Very good quality as it's made by Sony. There are many choices for this as well.
Internet Capability for browser: Very good, Tegra 2 is quite good, much faster than Handheld PCs. (Well of course, it's a few generations newer)
Internet Capability for emails: Good, I don't use it so much for this purpose.
WiFi Capabilty: Supports modern encryption methods.

If I were to choose something that has Microsoft OS, I like EMONSTER S11HT which is a Emobile and Japanese variant of Tytn II.

+1 on the Sony Tablet P. Saw these when they came out and fell in love. I still have my Tytn II, loved that phone. Thanks for the input Stingraze!

I too have the Sony P (the Japanese model which is the only one that shipped with ICS; the US got locked, un-upgradeable Honeycomb) and it's great.

But I think my new Gemini PDA is trumping the rest of my collection, starting with its 4G and the groovy keyboard.

I still like it. Not going to get the 2nd generation - not enough of the feature additions are relevant to me. Let's see what the 3rd generation brings!

The Gemini, hands down. It is everything I ever wanted in a handheld PC in 2018. I have the wifi-only model which comes closest to a pure handheld PC imho.

Good to hear Wyrm, and I agree. Another handheld would be the old school HP hx4700. Bought one from Rich a few years ago and enjoyed using it. Could do everything you'd need it to. Wifi, bluetooth, good screen and browser options. Not sure how usable it would be in 2018 though on the internet side.
