Anyone use any Windows CE software for marine use, or ever use any? Anyone ever have a serial transducer for depth readings with WinCE?

I never used Windows CE for marine use, but maybe this software called Terminal CE will help you?

It can communicate on your choice of COM port. I believe if the sensor / transducer supports commmunication by serial like a GPS, it may be able to do what you want.

I go fishing several days a week...and love it.

A lot of the "fish finders" and a lot of the "chart plotters" out there use proprietary software running under a CE shell. Actually Oziexplorer makes for great marine use once you convert the maps. And my Skeyepads all run on 12V directly, so they make great hardware (using a sunshield of course) on the boat. They are easy to mount since they come with car cradles too. The have open serial ports on them...so interfacing a depth transducer isn't a problem. The problem is that there is no CE software that I know of that will display (convert the serial signal) the depth. It's just a matter of timing really...I mean from the time of the generated pulse to the time of the received echo is all that it takes to measure the depth. So the CE application would simply do that...read the time the signal is sent to the time the echo is received in milliseconds and the calculate the depth based on that info.

Anyways, that's how they work...but finding an application is another thing. The proprietary commercial devices calibrate their software to the mechanical characteristics of the transducer. And while many are the same, many are also different, so you cannot just swap out any transducer for any other.

I was thinking it might be nice to have a big 8.4" screen instead of my little 3.5" screen on my Garmin fish finder. Using just the GPS alone works great with Ozi. Put your music on an SD card with the speaker output directed to a cheapo 15W amp and you have your music player too.

I know I can do the same thing with a cheap $40 Android tablet...and I may end up doing just that. Especially since there is a ton of marine navigational software already out there for Android...but it's just the challenge of using CE that keeps me going.

BTW, John's doing fine. Still writing his stories and selling them on Amazon.

Hm... by the sound of it, maybe you can do some eMbedded Visual C++ / Basic COM programming then!

So what's needed? An eVC app with timer precision and a com/stop/flow/bit/parity setting? Then what, (receive time - transmit time) * meters per second C?
Sounds way too easy...
