IrDA / infrared data communication and Android

Hello, I was wondering if IrDA on my Sigmarion 1 can communicate via infrared to my Sharp Android smartphone via some software. I know Activesync works in communicating with PC.

Sigmarion 1 runs Windows CE 2.11. (H/PC 3.0)

Yes, if you have compatible software. CE uses IrSquire not the more common IrObex. If you get marching protocol implementations, it'll work. Search the SCL for infrared. Total commander may be the quick go to as it works on both.

Sigmarion 1 transferred .txt file to my Android smartphone successfully via Infrared port with default settings using Total Commander as you suggested trying.

I wondered if the opposite could be done, and to my delight, it worked as well. (Android smartphone to Sigmarion 1's Total Commander Infrared File Receive using OBEX Protocol).

The reason I was trying was because I only had my Sigmarion 1 (which I was using to write to a .txt file) and my Android smartphone today with me, and thought it convenient to transfer a file without using memory cards or my laptop / pc. I think a use-case scenario will be to upload the .txt file I wrote to a server, blog, SNS via the smartphone.

You could probably write an Android app to sync the phone contacts with CE. It should also be technically possible to use IR to go online via the smartphone as a tether; though I don't know whether Android can route to a COM port... hmm.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing (about connecting Windows CE to internet via infrared on Android).

When I need to move stuff between incompatible devices I just email myself attachments.

SIR is 115.2Kbps, so you are correct there, but if you use a FIR enabled device you'll get 4Mbps and VFIR 16Mbps. The latter two wouldn't be too horrible. Subject to optimal lighting conditions...

I can remember trying to win an eBay auction in a services station over an IR tether to a Nokia at 9.6kbps GSM. Ahhh.. repressed memories... I didn't win -_-

Well, I'm going to load only text / pure html sites, so that shouldn't be a problem. I wish there was an magical trick to compress texts from MB to KB like they can do with JPEG. Or more exact, a browser renderer that just removes images and formats nicely to just text with compression

There have been loads of them over the years. I used to used squeezer back in the day on CE sometimes. I think it's long gone now though. Also HTTP allows for gzip and deflate compression in-band. You'd just need a browser that supports it.

Way to go, stingraze! TC is such a good app. I corresponded with the developer when I was trying to get Psion to swap files with a J720. He actually build a custom TC for HPC just for me.

And thanks, wyrm, for textised! I'm going to fire up the old 720 and Netfront and see where I can go tonight.
