MS was very careful to kill off the older versions of Skype. I had early Symbian version working on a Nokia 810 handheld and then one day, it wasn't working. I was paying them money to use it; dunno why they'd stop me.

I hadn't updated Skype on the familial desktop and even that wouldn't start unless I updated.

One change they made was to secure and trim the API, the second was to integrate the API in MS land by switching it over to what used to be MSN Messenger. Messenger had a plethora of security issues and fake/badly written clients out there (i.e. SPAMbots) so they locked the API down :. killing any client they didn't want in the process. Skype was to be Facetime for Windows 8. They took an OK product, made it mediocre and then made it worse*.

* The apps for Windows 10/Android are horrid IMHO.

I bet I have Word 97 on 10 computers. Just a phenomenal word processor; even does .docx

That can't be true. DOCX didn't even exist for another decade. Is there a plugin I never heard about?

Obviously, that's where they went wrong after Office 2003!

So much for the Uninstall Simulator gag

I've reinstalled it... again...

Windows clients these days are only designed to be user serviced if they are networked to a Windows Server. If they are run stand-alone, like most home PCs, then Microsoft is the network, and they're not very predictable.

Good thing I have my own Active Directory domain then so I don't have to suffer random self-uninstalls by our Redmond overlords... oh wait

Sorry, CE Geek. Didn't see your query until now.

But yeah, you can open and save in *.docx with Word 97. The file is FileFormatConverters.exe

I got it from MS but I can't find that link and while it seems available everywhere, I can't vouch for the sites. PM me if you can't find a copy that makes you feel safe.

It was the wondrous Rich H who first gave us the good news.

Nice find. Pretty big file (37 MB). Too bad there's no such converter for Pocket Office on H/PCs.

TextMaker for Android will still do .pwd-to-.docx/.docx-to-.pwd conversions. That's the closest thing I can come up with.

I didn't know that, that might come in handy for me.

It has been a long time since I have felt the desire to use Microsoft Office. It used to seem so much better than open source alternatives, but not any more.
