I compiled a kernel with the Aironet drivers: http://www.sp-net.at/hpc/dev/kernel/zImage
Maybe you can test it and give me some feedback!
Bye

| Inserted the card and was greeted with this
jornada720_pcmcia_configure_socket(): config socket 0 vcc 50 vpp 50
jornada720_pcmcia_configure_socket(): config socket 0 vcc 50 vpp 50
jornada720_pcmcia_configure_socket(): config socket 0 vcc 50 vpp 50
pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 0
pcmcia 0.0: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0 (IRQ: 98)
jornada720_pcmcia_configure_socket(): config socket 0 vcc 50 vpp 50
jornada720_pcmcia_configure_socket(): config socket 0 vcc 50 vpp 50
airo(): cmd:111 status:7f11 rsp0:2 rsp1:0 rsp2:0
airo(eth0): Firmware version 4.25.30
airo(eth0): WPA unsupported with firmware versions older than 5.30.17
airo(eth0): MAC enabled 00:40:96:2a:6e:9f
Apparently the driver is detecting the card fine, but it is not showing up on ifconfig. I'll check interfaces around and see if I can make it come up |

Thanks for your input. Will make suggested changes.
For Devuan, I'm using Transcend 64GB CF TS64GCF800 card like one you listed in earlier post.
Also have the following CF cards:
- SanDisk 64GB Extreme CF card
- Hoodman 32GB CF HS7CF32 card.
WinCE does not recognize the cards when inserted in the CF slot on the bottom of 728.
WinCE does recognize cards when inserted in adapter in PC card slot.
Are you able to use a large CF card in the CF card slot?
@ ntware
Understand your points about current linux situation vs JLime, etc, days.
Unfortunately, I can't find any small size CF cards. Used to have some, but can't locate them now.

| Hi!
Thats great. If you like to connect to a unencrypted or WEP encrypted Wifi you can do this with:
Run all commands as root:
su -
To power up the card:
ip link set dev wifi0 up
Connect to a open wifi network:
iwconfig wifi0 essid "Your_SSID" mode Managed
Obtain a IP adress from DHCP:
dhclient -v wlan0
For WPA you have to configure wpa_supplicant. But I dont know if this works with your card!
Edit:
This could be a problem with WPA:
airo(eth0): Firmware version 4.25.30
airo(eth0): WPA unsupported with firmware versions older than 5.30.17

Windows CE recognizes only the first FAT partition of the card, and I think Mark has partitioned it correctly with the FAT partition only 20MB big. So Windows CE should recognize it! Maybe the CF slot is faulty, because he said in the PCMCIA slot it works ...
Makes sense that WinCE should recognize card with 20MB partition.
I am contacting seller of 728 about faulty CF slot problem. Looks like I will need to ship back my 728 for repair or replacement....
Quote PS: I use a 128GB card in my Jornada without problems, because Windows CE only sees the 20MB FAT partition.
Glad to know that it works and should work OK.

| @ Mark
I think your CF slot is faulty. The 64GB CF TS64GCF800 was also my first card that i used without any problems! I now use a 128GB one ...
As i explained in an earlier post, Windows CE only sees the first 20MB partition. So all other bigger partitions are "hidden" for WinCE.
It would be good to try a smaller CF card with only one FAT partition in your J728s CF slot. So you can be sure that it is not the size of the card.
Maybe the cable of the CF slot has become loose or is broken, i remember that i had a spare unit with a broken cable... |

| WPA won't work with my card. Tried your commands but they don't seem to work.
ip link set dev wifi0 up brings wifi0 into ifconfig output with the correct MAC address, but with no ip address. Running iwconfig for my SSID gives no output, so I don't know if it worked or not. LEDs on the card also won't blink after that command and ifconfig still shows the card with no IP. Trying to run dhclient -v wifi0 throws me this error:
Unsupported device type 801 for "wifi0"
I think I'm getting there, but these earlier WiFi cards are kinda hard to deal with. My specific card does not support scanning, WPA, and a lot of other things.
edit: Just to emphasize this is not a card/network issue, I'm using an open SSID (no password ) that I have just for the Jornada. This card works just fine under WinCE to connect to my open SSID Edited by ntware 2020-09-25 7:58 PM

| Thanks, Stefan.
Yes, it makes sense that my slot is faulty.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to locate any of the old small CF cards I used to have.
And unfortunately, none of the local stores around here carry small size CF cards anymore. I would have to order one online and wait for it.
I wrote the seller about this and that I want him to repair or replace my 728. Waiting for response.....
Thanks.

| Hi Stefan, also tried your Devuan image today and it loaded fine on mine. A little slow due to the 32mb. But that’s to be expected. Interesting work. I had jlime working previously as I’ve only recently acquired a 720. My card is a 32gb cf and it worked straight away following the instructions from your site. Though like others I’m now wondering how to navigate it. I guess I need to brush up on my Linux skills. Would like to get wireless working with wpa I’ve a few cards to try with. Will be watching your progress on this
Kind regards
Mike |

| I got this running on my 720 as well. Transcend 4GB CF card was recognized right away.
I noticed that the Lucent Wavelan Silver card doesn't get recognized. I have a couple other PCMCIA wifi cards that I'll try. The Lucent card generated the following in dmesg:
jornada720_pcmcia_configure_socket(): config socket 0 vcc 0 vpp 0
jornada720_pcmcia_configure_socket(): config socket 0 vcc 50 vpp 50
jornada720_pcmcia_configure_socket(): config socket 0 vcc 50 vpp 50
pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 0
pcmcia 0.0: pcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0 (IRQ: 98)
Nothing further. No /dev/eth* or /dev/wifi* devices appear. Do I need to manually load a module perhaps?
Great work! |

| I think Stefan’s kernel cannot dynamically load modules. Try a simple lsmod and you will see that it returns blank. The driver needs to be compiled into the kernel image for it to work. |

| I tested a few other cards:
Cisco Aironet 350 (11 mbit): Not recognized
Lucent WaveLAN Silver (11 mbit): Not recognized
Orinoco WaveLAN Silver (11 mbit): Not recognized
Netgear FA410 (wired): Works great, NE2000 driver
Netgear MA401 (11 mbit): Detected, shows up as wlan0, no luck associating with AP, no iwlist scan results
Which wireless cards have you guys used successfully? |

| Hi!
My kernel can load modules dynamically. But i havent compiled that much modules yet to keep everything small. I will compile a few more modules and upload it to my website.

| Uploaded a new kernel and the modules: http://www.sp-net.at/nextcloud/s/5qBbkaXaZtiypbP?path=%2Fkernel3.16...
I compiled all available wifi drivers as modules!
