If you plan on doing a lot of replacements, then a spot welder can certainly be useful as Stefan suggests. If however you only will be working with 2 cells in a single Jornada. Get pre-tabbed cells and a soldering iron will do the job for a few pence more.

Yeah Luckily pre-tabbed cells are easy to get, though not every type. With the Jornada 720 battery, it needs to be noted that one cell has tabs that are facing the same direction and one cell has the tabs facing in different directions (125 degrees between the tabs), so long enough tabs and some bending is needed for that.

I didn't get to solder it yet, but here's my attempt. I'll make sure to document everything properly.

I recently refurbished a pack, too.

The plastic pack was easy to open, just glued at a few points and not all around. So cutting was unneccessary.

The Sony original cells came out easily with the attached controller and stripes.

I used standard industrial cells with 3,6V (there are different voltages available) and 2500mAh (that´s enough, those high-capacity-packs often are too big or don´t get fully charged).

The cells I chose have no outstanding contact button on the top. one is in u-shape, one in z-shape for the soldering plates. That way they fit easily inside the case and there is a few mm room on both sides to arrange them properly.

Just cut the stripes to the controller off from the old cells and resolder them with a few points to the new ones, done

I closed the case but didn´t glue anything. It fits perfectly into the slot on the Jornadas´ back.

The new ones last about 8h to 10h - so job well done

I bought from eBay a rechargeable battery-operated spot welder for 18650 cells and it came with a small sample of nickel bus strips the Type C USB cable for charging it and the insulated spot welder probes. Also has a small OLED display telling the battery status, power setting, and delay time setting. It works really well and costs only around $60.00 including shipping.

So low priced personal spot welders are now available to the masses.

I will order from them replacements for all my HPs. They are not cheap but good industrial grade. And they fit perfectly in the original case.

Today I was away from home for 12h. Forgot to switch off the 720. When I came home it was still running on 22percent

First refurbished is done and it's charging on the HP Jornada External Charger (very handy for this)!
I used two 2600 mAh (Z-Tag and U-Tag) batteries and it was very easy to do. If this works 100% then three repacks are scheduled for this weekend
