They called devices like these "word processors." They were going to be the replacement for a century-old device that many of the younger members here have never seen in person: the typewriter.

True, but word processors don't have the ability to connect to PCs via do they? Unless you count floppy disks.

Oh, I'm old enough to have seen the typewriter, don't worry...

Well said CE Geek...alas, all too true. and in between the two devices you speak of was...the Electric Typewriter! I took a "typing course" not computer course...we has snazzy IBM Selectrics with the innovative little ball like typing head...removable to change fonts (before the daisy wheel machines which morphed into printers) The keyboards were out of this world sumptuous...I learned on on a big electric IBM Executive and loved to cut a piece of paper in half using the automatic repeating electric hyphen ...sounded like a machine gun as it did so!!! When I completed the course I thought, "well, there's something I'll never use again" Those keys were so luscious...deliciously so...to this day I must have a keyboard ...the MP900 being my favorite, yet the Jornada720 is of similar feel and quality....and perhaps one reason I can seem a "bit too wordy"...(or so some may say). I really can't stand using touch screen typing...just hate it. So now you know...

Brother made a couple portable word processors. The "Brother Super PowerNote" could communicate via floppy (and serial I believe?) and had a couple of added bonuses in the software.

I really like "The Traveler" you posted. E-ink screen should make this baby last forever battery wise.

It's an interesting looking device. I am a fan of e-ink displays but I would definitely want it backlit. Years of reading on my 'Paperwhite' Kindle have spoiled me.

Hey! Where'd you get that photo?? That's me back in typing class...I was listening to "I've just gotta get a message to yooou" while typing out "Baby It's Cold Outside."

Alas, she was a quick brown fox who jumped over this lazy dog (me)...
