They called devices like these "word processors." They were going to be the replacement for a century-old device that many of the younger members here have never seen in person: the typewriter.
Well said CE Geek...alas, all too true. and in between the two devices you speak of was...the Electric Typewriter! I took a "typing course" not computer course...we has snazzy IBM Selectrics with the innovative little ball like typing head...removable to change fonts
(before the daisy wheel machines which morphed into printers
) The keyboards were out of this world sumptuous...I learned on on a big electric IBM Executive and loved to cut a piece of paper in half using the automatic repeating electric hyphen ...sounded like a machine gun as it did so!!! When I completed the course I thought, "well, there's something I'll never use again" Those keys were so luscious...deliciously so...to this day I must have a keyboard ...the MP900 being my favorite, yet the Jornada720 is of similar feel and quality....and perhaps one reason I can seem a "bit too wordy"...
(or so some may say
). I really can't stand using touch screen typing...just hate it. So now you know...
