Hi all

I'm new to this site, and ready to start on the handheld adventure! I started looking at HP200LX for the dos compatibility then realised PocketDos can run on Win CE . So I then looked at HP320lx and 630lx (colour!) and finally the Jornada series. I first looked at 6xx models running SH3 but now I've decided to go for either Jornada 720 or 780 both Strongerarm based giving access to PocketPC programs with Gapi and PocketDos. Maybe also Linux.

So now I'd like to hear which of these models people prefer and why. I prefer the 720 styling but is the 780extra ram a big performance boost.

Thanks for any feedback!

Steve

Hello Steve, welcome to HPC:Factor.

Couple of model number typo's there. There wasn't a 630, it was the 620 or the 660. Same with the 780 where I think you mean the 720 - the 780 was an NEC Model. See:
https://www.hpcfactor.com/hardware/devices/default.asp?page=showOem

I prefer the styling of the 720 too. I never liked the duck-egg silver of the 728. You can run the 720 ROM in a 728 though if you want perfection.

Honestly though, unless you want to play with Deuvian Linux, most people can suffice with the 720's 32MB.

Hi Chris

Thanks for your reply. Yes an abundance of typos, I blame fat fingers and the Android touch keyboard!
I did indeed mean 620lx, and 780 should have read 728.

I agree re the 728 styling, it's a shame they went with that silver finish. I'll probably go with a 720 . There's always the possibility of a ram upgrade if I want to get serious with Linux.

Speak for yourselves. I've always preferred the look of the 728.

In any event, we're not talking here about anything specific to H/PC Pro devices - nor has this conversation been limited to H/PC Pro devices, so -

I'm with CE Geek, I always liked the silver blue style of the J728 better. When I was in college, back in the late 2000s I managed to get a brand new unboxed J728 from China. A user here in HPC:Factor was advertising about this "lost" lot of Jornadas that were being sold on Chinese ebay of some sort. I PM'd him and he managed to buy one for me. It took a while to arrive (back then I lived in Brazil), but when it arrived, oh boy, it was my best handheld! I'm still sad that I eventually sold it, I should have kept it.

Answering OP's question, undoubtedly the Jornada 72x is the best handheld you can get. Rick will disagree as he is a NEC fan, but anyways... The Jornada 72x is blazing fast with the original WinCE 3.0 in ROM since it has a much more powerful CPU than its competitors of the time and WinCE is very lightweight. It can also run modern (like 2022 modern) Linux fairly well thanks to the effort of many users in this forum. Linux UI stuff can get bloated in it, specially if you don't have the 128MB RAM upgrade, but command line works well.
