I've just released my latest video on my 90's Palmtop YouTube Channel "Palmtop Tube":

"HP 200LX: Hosting a modern website on a Retro DOS Palmtop. Will this crazy idea work ?"


This is my largest video yet and took a LOT of work to research,
prepare, record and edit. I'd love it if take a peek.

My channel needs a website, and since my channel focuses on retro palmtops,
why not host the website on a retro palmtop!, the HP 200LX.

It might sound like a crazy idea, but if you watch the video,
which shows in detail how I set everything up,
you'll be amazed at how well it works...

How does the httpd throughput differ between using the RAM disk and the NFS mount?

I assume that the httpd gives you some basic server side includes support so that you aren't literally having to code copy the UI of every single page between html files?

This is my best performing video yet, with twice the views/likes of my best video to date (the first SCSI one)

The difference in speed when having to read the website files from the etherDFS drive is approximately 30% lower,
however I haven't done any real benchmarks on it yet, but will do so in my 2nd video where I setup the 2nd FTP / downloads server.

Unfortunately HTML doesn't support including other HTML files...
This is a really annoying thing that should have been implemented but never was,
so it's only possible when you're using a PHP page or something (which I can't do).

Also, the webserver itself has no mechanism to include files, so unfortunately I have to have each page's HTML file contain the same tags for the navigation etc...
But, it's not a lot of data so it's doable

HTML does support includes, provided that the httpd implements them through SHTML support

Scalability is the problem as you get more pages.. though you can use find and replace if you are cunning.

Yes, but plain HTML (client side) does nnot,
and httpserv (the mTCP server I'm using) does not support SSIs...

Could do it via JavaScript of course.

I wonder what it would take to implement a basic SSI include in the source code. The extra disk IO would hurt you though, unless the server stored the gzip version precompiled...

The problem is that there's no source code available for httpserv.
There is for mTCP, eg all the other tools in the suite, just httpserv lacks it's sources as the author does'nt want to publish the source for httpserv at this time...

Anyways, things are running fine, speed is good, and i'm happy with the results,
and I've already spent a LOT of time on it,
I need to move on to the 2nd video now, the ftp / downloads server, which will be another mountain of work

Thanks for your suggestions though I'll keep the javascript option in mind, should I want to optimize the site in the near future when I have time...
