Hello! I've been trying to get PocketC to work on my MIPS device, but whenever I try to launch it, nothing at all appears, no error message, just nothing at all. What could be causing this? Any ideas?

Hi,

Are you sure that the app runs on MIPS devices?

Maybe you have version for ARM devices?

Just a thought....

Best,

Mark

It does run on MIPS devices. I've also tried the ARM version on an ARM device, and both just quit immediately without an error or showing anything at all (also on CE 6)

Is it the right OS type?

For example, MIPS device may be Palm-size PC, Pocket PC, Handheld PC, or Handheld PC 2000.
The nearest match to your device should make the application work.

For example, running Pocket PC application on Handheld PC 2000 is possible with all the redgear stuff, but it is not the usual method.

So please figure out which OS type the device is running, and try the right OS type.

Thank you! It's a CE 5 device.

Can C:Amie chime in? I thought Windows CE had a error log reporting facility somehow? Perhaps if we dissect that log, we can figure it out?

No CE doesn't have Watson, so there is no crash log unless you hook it up to a debugger.

I would suggest that it is trying to call something in CE that is no longer present in CE 5;though it is odd that nothing appears at all as you would usually expect a runtime error.

What happens if you launch it from cmd.exe? Does it print anything to stderr?

Hi I located an old archive of more CE programs and added them to the SCL. I found a different version of PocketC

https://www.hpcfactor.com/scl/1246/OrbWorks/PocketC_Runtime/version_...
Please first try that Mfc library zip with your current version. If that doesn’t work, try the mfc library zip with version 1.28 and let us know what happens

I've tried both version 3 and the one that you sent with and without the MFC DLL, in all cases I've gotten a "cannot find X (or one of its components)". I've tried using executabilitycheck but all the DLLs seem to be there.. I'm kind of at a loss

Some thoughts:
I think after HPC2000, so CE 4.0 + higher don't have certain .dlls installed in ROM from previous versions (aside from the MFC). I remember reading a forum post about it here sometime. Perhaps someone could enlighten?

I have a Windows CE 6.0 x86 device, I'll try PocketC to see if I have the same problem as you ( I know it's different processor, but if mine doesn't work either, that most likely means we're missing some sort of .dll that HPC2000 and earlier devices typically have installed in ROM)

What was the make/model of your CE5 MIPS device? Perhaps we can add it to the Devices list so we can record compatibility info (+ you can put your device in the HPCFactor census)

The device is pretty much a one of a kind, it's a TV set top box that works like a CEPC for debugging purposes. I use it exclusively as a CEPC though.
