There is a download on the PocketDos site for ELK
http://www.mediator-software.com/pocketdos/DiskImages/ELKS.zip

The goal of the ELKS project is to create a Linux option for

8086 and 80286 class PC's
Palmtop Computers
Single board microcomputers
Embedded controller systems
Other old computers
Turns out it runs great on J720 under PocketDos.

The readme file has instructions for booting the floppy image in Pocketdos. Make sure you have the "check for valid boot sector"  option disabled in settings.

There's more background on this archived site

Intriguing. What apps are you running? Is there a repo, is it wifi-capable?

Havent done much beyond the install tbh. Shared libraries and networking aren't included so it's just providing a basic Linux shell although commands can be added "manually". Problem is its an archive from 2001...

What may be more interesting is this modern attempt to provide a dos equivalent of WSL.

https://fossbytes.com/developer-creates-dos-subsystem-for-linux-dsl/

https://github.com/haileys/doslinux

It's a current project which injects Linux and Busybox into an MS-DOS preinstalled disk image.
Described as:
A WSL alternative for users who prefer an MS-DOS environment. DOS Subsystem for Linux integrates a real Linux environment into MS-DOS systems, allowing users to make use of both DOS and Linux applications from the DOS command prompt.]

Looks pretty easy to set up initially, I will give it a try under PocketDos MS6.22. I've used WSL quite a bit under Windows and that works pretty well. This might extend the MS-DOS environment on the jornada in a similar way.
It would be cool if we could get WiFi and WPA this way....

Running "Linux" inside Dosbox inside Windows CE. Makes no sense for me - we can run a full Linux Kernel on the J7xx ...

Fair enough. This method uses Pocketdos to essentially switch to a Linux shell.
For those who already found a use for a dos shell inside a Jxxx this extends that capability, with a fairly simple installation.

I plan to try both. I have the 128mb ram ready and waiting ...

The emulation via BOCHS even on Sigmarion 3 with 400MHz processor is painfully slow.

I guess the load of the ELK on DOS on 286 should be light enough.
Going to try it out soon.
