| So, update completed. Guess what?! Everything works perfectly!
Because? why?! If I install Windows 98 clean, does it give problems? As an upgrade from windows 95 to 98 no! I don't understand anything! |

Crazy!
I know, but it's the only way to use windows 98 without any problems. If you have a better solution ... |

| I never realised you were upgrade installing. That was never advised as a strategy TBF. |

| It was the last choice, I was left with no other solution. All the solutions taken have failed. I tried other solutions too, but the problem remained.
It is very strange that Windows 95 handles installations better than windows 98, at least on my PC it is.
Could it be the installation CD I have? Maybe some obscure unknown problem?
Anyway, to be "crazy" I have to say it was quite a feat. Installation of WIndows 95, upgrade to windows 98 first edition (it is not possible to upgrade immediately to the second edition ) and then upgrade to the second edition! What do you think?

| Listen, is there a way to fix this error in the icon displays? When I reset them, they go back to normal, but after a while or on a reboot, this problem returns. I think it's one of the famous problems when you don't do a clean install.

Yes, it solved!
Ok, found out one thing, in Advanced Settings, there is ROM Shadowing
I noticed that except the first three options, I can change everything.
Here almost everything is disabled, except the last entry which is enabled, it says: (BIOS for video adapter ).
Isn't that the option to disable the integrated card?
Isn't it better for me to enable everything, since everything is disabled?

| No, shadowing is the process of copying ROM into RAM for faster access by the processor. c0000h - c7fffh is the external VGA vBIOS and opROM code memory address. Allowing it to shadow copies the video BIOS to RAM from the PCI card at boot. It has nothing to do with disabling the S3.
If you don't need the ROM shadowed to RAM, don't shadow it. It just wastes RAM - not that it's an issue on this system now. It will also marginally slow down POST and can cause power management issues as opROM code isn't necessarily state change friendly.
You would expect that if it is a BIOS option, it would be in onboard devices "Devices and I/O Ports" and "Video Setup". Unless it's a physical jumper switch of course??
Can you photograph both of those menu screens? |

| I have this picture aside. BUT I remember well that there is nothing to disable the integrated video card.
In the video options, there is only the Matrox card. But it doesn't allow you to do much.
DDC video control is disabled and cannot be enabled.
Palette Snooping is disabled, but can be enabled.
There is nothing more.

| So I went to look for the drivers in the windows folder and after a thorough search I found dxs3.inf. Once deleted, I went to device manager and deleted the integrated video card, restarted windows I get the notification of new hardware found, I can stop the installation of generic drivers, since its, it does not find them but the problem remains, even with only but matrox installed ....

| It's because the BIOS isn't relinquishing the I/O addresses to Windows properly. Windows is supposed to ask the BIOS to release it if there is a override in place, but it isn't doing it. Essentially this is Windows 98 telling you the firmware isn't Windows 98 compatible. I had a P166 MMX laptop that had the same problem. Windows 95 worked fine, but anything newer and Windows just couldn't cope with the BIOS so power management wouldn't work and some peripheral devices acted up too. It was most frustrating as the laptop was a mid-1997 machine that essentially you couldn't really use on battery. |

| This explains why doing the update and not the clean installation solves the problem. It relies on windows 95. |
