Well ... installing *nix on a CE device does not really require a certain version of wince to be running, although you may need to find the right bootloader for whatever version of wince is running.

If you are flashing your flash rom, then it is irrelevant altogether.

In your case, your device is not flashable, so you need to find a bootloader that runs on ce2.0. I believe your device uses a MIPS cpu so you may try NetBSD http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/hpcmips/

Specs from HP
http://h18002.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/10018_div/10018_div.h...

I must take my hats off to HP. They still provide detailed specs, docs, manual, drivers for products long EOLed. HP rocks!

First, check on the site to see if your device is supported. http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/hpcmips/
Scroll down and check... ... ok, I checked ... Yes, its supported ...

You just need a CF card reader. Partition a CF card (~256MB) it to have a small FAT16 partition (~32MB - 64MB) Copy the bootloader and the bootinstall image onto it. If you intend to install by local directory, ie CF card, copy the other pkgs and binaries onto the CF card, in a directory, say "netbsd".

Run the bootloader and select your bootinstall image, netbsd if ungzipped, netbsd.gz if zipped.

Details here ... ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.6.2/hpcmips/INSTALL.html

Remember to backup your settings as installation *will* wipe out your wince from memory. When you do a reset of your device, wince will be restored from rom, so no worries about restoration.

I'm kind of with flamin on this one...sometimes I like that good old CE 2 (in monochrome) more than linux on a portable system. Heh, I personally have neve thought of using it on anything slower than 200mhz...that's what DOS and CE are for.

-Good job, you have the H/PC I wanted back in 2000!

Sure you can install dos! Just get the freedos source and find the source code for all the necessary programs! (Word, other stuff...) And port it all to your H/PC! We could use a third operating system...

In short, no.

-I wonder if it is possible to port freedos? (Obviously we cannot port word.. )

No need to shout. Stop the hatin!

In short - no. See, the 2010c should be able to run linux, but if you check the jlime forums, it is a bootloader-related problem. CE 2 is missing stuff necessary to run the current bootloader. I believe there will be an attempt to fix this.

Yes, it should work. For CF->pcmcia card adapter, go to ze Bay ... tons of them ...
