So some of you might remember there was a Linux called VR Linux / Linux-VR for many of the machines including many Mobile Gear and Workpad z50. I so happened to find the page through NetBSD/hpcmips http://www.jp.netbsd.org/ja/ports/hpcmips/ .

A lot of the files (maybe most?) had been safely archived by archive.org.

I am now in the process of downloading it all via wget.

Maybe I will mirror it as an archive somewhere.

I've zipped up the kernel and other related stuff.
It's uploaded on my server:

http://www.informed.ninja/linux-vr/linux-vr.zip

I think it will serve as a archive for some time.

This is the original Linux-VR site still active (kernel etc. aren't available there)

Bonus:
Linux VR on Sharp Telios (Intermec 6651) with X Server etc. working

Thanks for sharing all this, stingraze!

As I have a Intermec 6651 coming soon, I'd really like to give this a try.

I've tried to translate the Japanese to English on the webpages you provided:

http://pc1.peanuts.gr.jp/~kei/linux-vr.htm

http://www.axe-inc.co.jp/~fuku/linux-telios/

However, when I try to translate them to English using google translate, it does not work.

Do you know of a way for me to see them in English?

Thanks!

Mark

Hey ArchiMark, just curious, did you get the 6651 from eBay? If so, I just saw that listing the other day! It was a great price and in great condition!! Congrats

Hey torch,

Yes indeed.....thanks to the notification post on the forum.....

Other than needing a new battery, it does seem in good condition....

Hopefully, I can rebuild battery, unless there's a working one out there somewhere...

LIke the size of it and the larger display and keyboard as compared to the great J72x....which is helpful given my eyesight....

Hope to see it early next week.

stingraze - have you gotten netbsd or Linux running on a mobilepro (or similar)? I had serious stability issues when I tried. I posted to the hpcmips mailing list but didn't get very far.

Here's the thread if anyone is interested:

https://mail-index.netbsd.org/port-mips/2021/04/12/msg001011.html

I got the base system for NetBSD 3.0 working but the software archives are all gone so it was sorta pointless.

p.s. The wireless stuff is working WAY better in NetBSD than in Windows CE. It is so painful to me that I couldn't get it working because it would make this device beyond amazing!

Hi. I’ve gotten NetBSD 7.99 working on Sigmarion 1, which is like a small NTT docomo / NEC version of Mobile Pro. I used to have a Mobile Gear (Japanese ver. of Mobile Pro), but don’t have it now. I think it isn’t too hard to install it on Mobile Pro, but in my case I used a already compiled binary and wrote it to my CF or SD using dd.

Hi ArchiMark, glad you found it useful. Try deepl.com for translation, it is a superb translation service. If that doesn’t work, just pm me then I will try to get it translated for you.

DOMO ARRIGATO, stingraze.....deepl works great on the text Kei's LInux-VR project page.

Bad news, is that it sounds I'd need to work to get it to work on the Intermec 6651.

Supported models
IBM WorkPad z50, NEC MobileGear-II R300/R320/R500/R510/R430/R530 have been tested. (I have only z50 and R-300 on hand...)

Other machines should also be supported by rewriting linux/include/asm-mips/vr41xx-platdep.h. (Kernel recompilation is required. (Kernel recompilation required)

If you can provide us with information on how it works on other models, we will commit it to the original source tree.

For the webpage http://www.axe-inc.co.jp/~fuku/linux-telios/

I get 404 not found....

If you come across some page(s) that show that a version of any version of linux works on the Intermec 6651, please let me know. It would be great to try it out on it.

thanks.

Mark

Im not trying to butt in but did you check archive.org for that url that said not found?
Play with the date snapshots to see if it gives you what you want

torch, thanks for the archive.org link.

I remember it was working when I posted this, maybe the webmaster deleted it.

Wow that's exciting. I'll check out 7.99 and see if I can get it running. Thanks!

There doesn't seem to be a 7.99 (or I'm misunderstanding). I see 7.0, 7.1, 7.2...and then 8.0. Any hints?
