Maybe it’s a compiled original one from somebody.
Anyway, https://github.com/ebijun/NetBSD/blob/master/dmesg/hpcmips/sigmarion

I need to find more links about it. I loaded on my Sigmarion 1 several years ago and there were more info on it before. Will post again.

Okay so I found some info.

This is a bit old, about NetBSD 6.5 on Windows CE. I recommend using DeepL https://www.deepl.com for superb automatic translation service.
Japanese:
http://www.6809.net/tenk/?%E9%9B%91%E8%A8%98%2F2015%2D08%2D15

I think this is the latest hpcmips image built by ebijun.
I haven't tested this image myself. I think is is for Sigmarion 1. Not too sure.

http://cdn.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/misc/jun/hpcmips/2019-07-18-hpcmip...

Details on GitHub here:
https://github.com/ebijun/NetBSD/tree/master/hpcmips/Image

If you need more info, tell me.

In regards to BSD on the 6651:
I found
https://mail-index.netbsd.org/port-hpcmips/2002/12/21/0001.html
Quote

Hello all,

For those of you working on this product, great job! I have enjoyed playing
with it. I hope to help out myself once I learn a little more about drivers
on BSD.

Here's the problem - I am trying to load v1.6 on my Intermec 6651 (equiv of
Telios HC-VJ2C) and having little success so far. I have tried booting the
generic kernel as a Sharp HC-VJ1C or HC-AJ1/AJ2. But it never completes the
boot.

Booting as HC-VJ1C the last line of the boot log is:
"jump to 0x81d6d000 (info=0x81d6c000, pvec=0x816c5000)"

Booting as HC-AJ1/AJ2 the last line of the boot log is:
"jump to 0x81dae000 (info=0x81dad000, pvec=0x816ba000)"

The only other error I get is an error during the boot before the lockup,
"no symbol and/or string table in binary. (not fatal)". I have the symbols
there so I am not sure why I am getting this. But it did not bother my
PenCentra install so I ignored it.

I have done some research so I know this has been solved by other people,
but my Japanese is rusty. 8^(
(and the free translation engines are not quite up to the task) I have also
started trying to recompile a debug version of hpcboot.exe for my machine,
but I am still working on it.

Thanks for any help!

Joe Steele

Obviously, this is for version 1.6 so that's super ancient- I'll try to see if I can find anything else for the 6651

This page is useful I think to see how far people got with various devices:

https://web.archive.org/web/20050307101448/http://www.jp.netbsd.org/...

Looks to me like the following devices should be working pretty good:

Sigmarion I / II
Workpad Z50
MP7xx
Helios HC-Axx
Compaq 2010c

Unfortunately, the Intermec 6651 does not show that someone got it working....at least on that table. Wish that was different situation since my 6651 should arrive on Monday.....

Does all the above look correct to you?

Some more clues:

Slideshow test for wscons display, NetBSD/hpcmips on SHARP Telios

Install NetBSD on Sharp Telios HC-AJ1 (2001 info)

Also on this wiki, Intermect 6651 is said to be supported. (It doesn't have the Y mark for booted etc. though)

Thanks for the links, stingraze!

Just watched video....unfortunately, fairly low res video settings so I can't read the console text....but the slideshow looked pretty good.

On the wiki, there are no 'Y' in any columns for the Intermec 6651, so, not sure if it means that it's working or that no one reported it working?

There are the other machines with 'Y' in the columns that I listed in my post above.

Anyone know what the column heading 'PCIC' refers to?

When I get my 6651 next week, I will try to install and get it running.....

Can someone explain if VR Linux is based on NetBSD or other linux distro?

Thanks!

NetBSD isn't Linux, it branched from UNIX (rather UCB 4.3BSD), historically.
http://www.netbsd.org/about/history.html

I didn't know about this, but seems like:
"BSD systems can claim direct ancestry from Version 7 Unix. Or, according to Open Source advocate Eric Raymond, BSD systems can be considered "genetic Unix", if not "trademark Unix."" according to this link on Wikipedia.

VR Linux / Linux VR is Linux, originated from Linus Torvalds.

But saying this, probably you knew that.

Let me check what PCIC is about.
Update: I think it's PCMCIA controller

Update 2:
Found some more info on The Telios / Intermec and more stuff there which might help...
http://purpleskank.wikidot.com/sharp-telios-hc-vj1-info-and-hax

Some stuff about flashing ROM etc. there, never heard of this before.
"Bootloader tinkering

Various key combinations can be entered during startup:

Space+R - ROM Monitor (to be verified)
Space+M - ROM Monitor
Space+P - Boot from PCMCIA card
Space+V - Flash ROM from PCMCIA card
Space+K - Diag menu (see below)"

Update 3:
Found an archived site about the Telios in English, from the maker of VR Linux / Linux VR
https://web.archive.org/web/20091208032321/http://www.sikigami.com/~...

Linux for MIPS (Including PDA)

Thanks again for all our info and input, stingraze....very helpful!

Yes, know that linux is by Linus T.....and NetBSD isn't linux....

I really meant to ask whether VR linux was based upon any other well known distros, such as Debian, Arch, etc....

As for NetBSD, some years ago, I installed it on my little Zaurus SL-3200.... and built a few app binaries on the Z itself....unfortunately, couldn't get some of the apps I wanted to build...so, gave up on it, but it was cool to see on such a tiny device.

So, if PCIC = PCMCIA, then I hope this means you can use CF and PC cards.....

Assume 'bootloader tinkering' means they had to do some modifications to try and get it to work.

Key combo info is good to know....

Thanks for the other links...

Yeah, I thought so. I was looking for what the Linux VR was based on, will write again if I find some more clues. I think it was based on SGI's MIPS Linux maybe? Not too sure, I remember it being on SGI's server so it might have been the case.

It might have been based on systems / distribution similar to this:
https://www.linux-mips.org/wiki/IP22

Update:
Found some more:
This is surprisingly an English page. I guess there was more to the Linux VR project.

https://web.archive.org/web/20001009192254/http://linux-vr.org/
https://web.archive.org/web/20001101054840/http://linux-vr.org/booti...

Bonus:

Have a good day!

Again, great info, stingraze!

Those English pages are very helpful. Especially, the linux-vr booting page.

Best,

Think maybe the 'VR' in VR Linux, relates to naming convention of MIPS chips that start with VR....

like VR4111 or VR4121, etc.....

Very cool. Can't wait to try it out. Just gotta find a 2GB CF card in one of these drawers...
