Hi,

Santa arrived early and yesterday a I received an Intermec 6551 in excellent condition, except for battery, which is dead.

Fortunately, for now, I can use it with the AC charger.

Since it's lithium-ion battery, I'm nervous about trying to recell it myself.

It is 1800 mAh.

Part number 871-012-010.

I found some battery rebuilders online, but batteryrefill.com seems like it's not in business now. Email bounced and no one answered phone.

Anyone have any suggestions as where I might either get a 'new battery' or someone to re-cell the one I have?

Thanks for any input.

Mark

There is this company in Japan that does recelling for Sharp Telios (Japanse Intermec), but it's quite expensive. ($61.87 to $72.37 at the current rate)

Sharp Telios HC-AJ1 / HC-AJ2:
https://batt.co.jp/products/detail/10224260

Sharp Telios HC-AJ3:
https://batt.co.jp/products/detail/10224278

Also, you can't just ship the battery alone, so you will have to find a Telios without battery and put the recelled battery in that to send.
You can also remove the old battery and put the recelled one in the Telios too.

If you aren't comfortable doing it yourself, then your best bet might be to find an electrical repair shop (one that actually understands micro electronics and not just a screen swap factory) and see if they'll do it for you. They'll probably have a spot welder to tab the battery properly - likely 18650's.

Thanks, C, good idea, will see if I can find one.....might still be one around here in Silicon Valley......

I would try doing it, if it wasn't for the potential fire issue with lithium batteries.....

Got lucky I think.....

Called a shop that I used in the past to do some laptop repairs and they said they can re-cell the battery!

Will drop it off in the next day or so....

Well, it's worked pretty well for the past 250 years or so......

So, why change a good thing?

It's fun working out dimensions on projects.....11-7/16" + 3/32" + 1' - 3/4" + 5-5/8"......

Yep, think I did....

Actually, we have the worst of both worlds here.....

Some things like woodworking and carpentry work are done in Imperial system and other things like scientific and medical related things are done in metric.....

Gas (petrol for you...) is sold in gallons in tenths (like 3.3 gallons on the pump display...) and beverage bottles often state capacity in liters....and/or ounces.....

Maybe this is good workout for the little gray cells.....

TBF, we are stuck in the middle too, though not quite as bad. Miles lingers on, anyone over 45 probably lets yards slip out occasionally and we still tend to weigh ourselves in stones in conversation.

At least you never had to deal with this horror story much after 1776 over there...

After watching the entire video, all I can say is bloody heck......krikey.....

The mind boggles.....

Although it makes me think that if there were HPC's before 1971, there would have been a big market for an app for calculating making change in transactions.

Now back to our regularly scheduled broadcast.....

Drove to the computer repair shop on way home....

Guy I spoke to on the phone earlier in the day looked very puzzled when I said I was there to drop off battery to get re-celled.....he said you mean replaced? I said it's about 20 years old, so, not very easy to find a replacement battery....hence my asking him on phone about re-celling....realized he didn't know what I meant, had to explain.....he said he didn't think they could do that.....but....he did say, he had some contacts he could call to see if he could source a new battery....said he should have some news for me tomorrow.....hopefully.....

We shall see.....
