Hi,

Trying to install NetBSD on my new MP790.

Following instructions from:

https://wiki.netbsd.org/tutorials/how_to_install_netbsd_on_a_nec_mob...

So far, haven't been able to get it to boot. The boot app opens but get error message.

Then downloaded the 3 files referred to, un-archived them, then copied the 3 files to my 128MB CF card.

Then copied the 3 files over to 'Internal Flash ROM' directory on 790.

Removed the 128MB card and put in the 64GB card (formatted as netbsd) in 790.

Then opened the 'pbsdboot' file.

In window that opened, typed in path to netbsd file in Internal Flash ROM in the 'Kernel name' field.

Watching You Tube video that shows this boot process, it looks like path is:

/Internal Flash ROM/netbsd

In the Frame Buffer field, I selected Mobile Pro 780 (instructions say this works)

Left the Options field empty.

I ignored Properties button.

When I click on Boot button, I get window saying:

Error()

Can't write pbsdboot.ini

I click 'OK' button.

Then get error message:

PocketBSD boot

open failed.

It occurred to me that the only likely explanation for boot app not opening the installer file is that there's something wrong with the file.

Thinking maybe I didn't uncompress the file correctly.

I used the Archiver app in Manjaro linux to extract file. Maybe I should have use Terminal and gunzip to do it as it is a .gz file.

So, this morning, I gunzip'd the 2 .gz files in terminal on my laptop running Manjaro linux.

Then copied files onto my 128MB CF card.

Then when I put card in 790 and try to copy files onto the 790, I get error message:

'Error copying file 'netbsd': Error code 87.'

Re-read instructions, it says to get "psdboot.exe and netbsd file from the 3.0 installation directory. Ungzip
the kernel before you use it. Also grab the netbsd-GENERIC file and
ungzip it for later use."

So, unless I misunderstand instructions, I think I did what was supposed to do, correct?

Anyone have any suggestions about this?

Thanks,

Mark

I don't have a 790 so I don't have the option of using internal flash ROM, but here is what I did on my 780...
1. partition large CF card with a small fat16 partition at the front, big enough to hold install stuff
2. copy entire hpcmips directory from netbsd 3.0 archive
3. move hpcboot.exe, netbsd.gz, netbsdsymbols.gz and miniroot.fs.gz to \Storage Card2
4. run hpcboot
5. settings - kernel tab: \Storage Card2\, netbsd.gz, root file system: sd (\Storage Card2\miniroot.fs.gz)
6. press Boot, answer yes and yes and it reboots and install starts.

Note: I think but can't remember for sure, that you should adjust your memory slider as far as it will go since you'll want all the RAM you can have.

THANK YOU, sir, for your help and detailed info!

So, if I understand correctly, you did not uncompress the .gz files that you copied to the 780, correct?

p.s. I think the big advantage of using the 790 for this is that you can move everything to the internal flash ROM- hpcboot, miniroot, netbsd etc and then run it from there on boot. You might just try what I did but with your internal flash ROM instead of the CF card. On my 780 after installation I have to first boot to WinCE, and then run hpcboot manually with the installed boot kernel EVERY TIME. It's not ideal but it works.

Forgot to mention, I'm trying to install netbsd onto the 64GB CF card that I formatted as netbsd.

Also, I installed the 16MB RAM module, so, I have total of 48MB RAM.

So you're trying v9.3? or 3.0? If 9.3, please let me know how it goes!

Trying 9.3....if it doesn't work, I'll try 7.1(?), which I think I read that it worked for someone.

Had to work my way through some of the install steps....was a bit confusing to me.....and found a typo in one place in the instructions, which really is irritating, when you follow instructions but they don't work....finally, found what it should have written.....so it goes...

Now about to install the sets from a second CF card in PC card adapter in the PC Card slot......

Crossing my fingers....

Thanks! I need all the help I can get!....

And in fact, I do need some help with installing process.

I followed instructions and copied install .tgz files onto my 128MB CF card. Put in PC Card adapter and into 790.

The 64GB netbsd formatted CF card is in the CF slot.

Per instructions, I mounted the 128MB card and in shell, I did 'ls' and can see all the install files.

Yet when I try to install the sets (having already set the location of the files), the installer returns message:

"RELEASE set kern-GENERIC does not exist."

Have re-read instructions multiple times and double-checked that system 'sees' the files on the 128MB card. So, don't understand why installer can't see the files and install them.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Is it installing any of the sets at all or stopping immediately with this error message? And can you describe the steps you took to tell the installer where the sets are (not the mounting part but where you input the location of the sets to the installer).

Not installing anything, as it can't locate any files.

I mounted the 128MB card with all the files in PC Card slot.

Per instructions, I selected 'local directory' as location of the files.

Then on next screen it has several lines that show location of the sets and refers to them as .tgz files, which they are.

I changed the location to be 'mnt/sets' which is where the card/directory of files is located.

Then I start install and it gives me the error message.

Thanks.

I found some posts online regarding issues with v.9.3....so think it may not be possible to get it to install.

So, dropping back to v.7.1.2....which I hope will work.

Looked at files for it and they match the ones you mention.

Have copied all the files to the 'Internal Flash ROM' directory, except for 'miniroot.fs.gz'. It won't let me copy it.

Get Error message:

cannot copy file 'miniroot.fs.gz'. Error code 87.

Sigh.......

UPDATE

Trying to install like you did from Storage Card instead of Internal Flash ROM....

note: I was using v3, not 9.3. I have not gotten anything newer than 4 to install. I need to go back and look at that stuff stingraze posted and see if I can get any of that to install because the pkgsrc for everything older than 7 has been permanently deleted

edit: correction - everything older than 8! yuck.
